Unfortunately this issue is most commonly caused by an electrical failure with the camera's power unit. Sometimes a hard reset will work, though I'm not sure if permanently.

Usually the solution is to call Canon's tech support and have the unit sent in for service. To give the reset a try however turn your camera on and immediately press and hold the Menu button for approximately 7 or 8 seconds (until you get a Reset Camera message). If you can get this far, do the reset and then power down the camera.

Then remove the memory card, the batteries and the date/time battery unit (a small rectangular door located inside the main battery well). Once all batteries are removed, turn the camera's power switch into the on position. Wait two minutes then press the power button as if turning it off. Then replace all batteries and the memory card.

Turn the camera back on and immediately set the time and date.
Turn the camera off and on a few times and take a few shots if possible. This works in about 25% of the time. If it doesn't and you have confirmed that the battery itselef is good (by placing it in another unit typically) then the camera will typically have to be sent in for a service repair.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
HeavyDLB

S20is definitive answer to battery problem
If you look closely, ONE of the strapping terminals on the battery compartment door is made of three separate parts. These tarnish with age and go high resistance. If you are VERY good with a soldering iron you can scrape the nickel coat and solder the three parts together without melting the plastic. The other contact is a single piece and is no problem. This was deliberately designed by Canon which is why they never offered a fix. My camera has been perfect for weeks now, unfortunately its technology is a bit dated.

Check that your battery terminals are clean and that none of them are loose. You may also need to change an internal battery, the one that saves the date & time.

I have a Canon PowerShot S2IS that gives me a black screen and a "change batteries" message even with new batteries. Is there a way to re-set or re-boot the camera?

Try cleaning the battery compartment contacts with a cotton swab "dampened" in rubbing alcohol. Also clean the battery contacts and the charging station the same way. Thanks, Dana

My Canon S2 IS keeps saying 'change the battery' even if I put the new batteries in. Why...? Thanks.

there is a little coing battery located inside the battery compartment for the AA's. CR1220 you can get this at Radio Shack for about $5. If this battery is bad you will get the change batteries screen no matter how many fresh AA's you put in, Use a good quality alkaline battery such as the Energizer rechargable rated at 2700 mAh.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:
