Question about Intermatic Inc. ST01C Digital In-Wall Timer

1 Answer

My intermatic 7 day timer frequently resets - blinks a bogus time. I think it may be the result of a loss of power, which we experience randomly. We've contacted the provider regarding this. That said, I've now had two of the same units. When I push the on/off to manually turn the lights on/off, nothing happens. This happen with the previous unit, so I replaced it. Now it's happening again. Any ideas?

You probably have it wired wrong or using it in a switch application it was not meant for. This timer needs a hot and neutral connnection full time. You can't just use wire colors as a guide, you need to know what they are from and too. All indications are that you have it wired wrong or can't use this type of timer on the light circuit you are trying to use it on. Not all wall switch circuits are wired the same. There are several ways to do it and some ways won't support timers like this.

Question seems to indicate that timer worked correctly for a while >> and then quit.

If timer worked, then wiring is correct, but other factors are causing new timer to fail just like the old timer.

Loss of power will cause screen to blink 12:00 > the battery back up will hold Time-Date for a period of time, but you may have to reprogram Time-Date. The scheduled programming remains in timer with or without a battery until timer is manually reset using reset button

    Troubleshooting from manual
    - If you are running near max load, heat will shorten life of timer: Max load capacity for ST01C (and most wall timers) is 1440 Watt tungsten (light bulbs) and 960 Watt florescent.
    - If manual override does not make audible click noise, it indicates CR2 battery is low, or timer has failed
    - Manual says nearby electrical interference can stop timer from operating
    - Battery operated timers don't work on circuits that are more than 100' from timer
    - This timer does not work with underground wiring

Intermatic HB77R Power Switch Problem

HB77R is discontinued timer.
If reset and battery change will not restore functionality, then replace timer with HB800RCH lifetime timer, or HB880R outdoor timers:

Will not turn on, no display. only comes on when the reset button is depressed and held.

1) More information is needed.
Is this new installation? Or timer that worked before and stopped working? Add a comment with complete information.

2) There are no repairs for defect timer, other than to reset timer and reprogram.
If functionality is not restored, then timer might have gone bad.

3) Question posted under ET724 in-wall timer.
If you have different timer, then add a comment.
There are at least 2 different versions of this timer. Grasslin, and GE and now Intermatic, and maybe others have made -or- are making this timer -or- have sold rights for somebody to make this timer.

4) The screen blanks during power failure.
Check that timer is getting power, and breaker is not tripped.
Frequently, power outages cause timers to fail when power turns on again and power surge affects timer.

5) Known versions of this timer are connected to Neutral wire. Timer has internal, non-replaceable battery that can go bad.
If timer-white wire is not connected to neutrals, then display will not operate.
Neutral wires are white wires that are twisted together, covered with wire nut and pushed to back of box.

Had to change battery. Since I did this the day will scroll several times and will not let me set the day, nor the time, nor the mode. Is my unit toast ?? As it was working till I changed the battery.

Most digital timers suggest resetting as last-step effort to restore functionality.
This particular timer is reset by removing battery.
Try removing battery again. Otherwise it seems the timer has gone bad.
HB88RC is discontinued product.
Replacement is heavy-duty Intermatic HB800RCL 2-outlet or HB800RCH 1-outlet timer.

I have a Dayton time switch hot water heater timer model 2E214 7 day timer in a house that I just bought. Don't really understand how to use it. Where can I find a manual or user guide? Or can someone ...

1) Dayton 2E214 timer is Grainger number for Intermatic 7801B timer.
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/INTERMATIC-Electromechanical-Indoor-7-Day-2E214

2) Grainger page also show extra on-off trippers for the timer

3) Same/similar timer shows for water heater on following link:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Boxtype.html#T7400

4) I have a similar manual in my files:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/t7802b-2no-2nc.pdf

5) Intermatic site is offline this weekend but link to iNTERMATIC manuals is following:
http://www.intermatic.com/products/timers/mechanical%20time%20switches/7%20day%2040%20amp.aspx

6) If link above does now show exact product, then type Intermatic model number into search bar, and it will show manuals.

7) To operate the timer, attach silver and gold trippers to face of dial. See image below of Intermatic 24-hour dial.
The trippers are labeled on and off.
Buy more trippers at grainger if needed.
geno_3245_296.jpg

ON tripper pushes lever that closes circuit and turns water heater ON.
OFF tripper pushes same lever other direction that closes circuit and turns water heater OFF.
Dial rotates as time passes.
To set current time, rotate dial until current time lines up with pointer. The pointer is stationary.
I believe this model has to be reset after power outage.

Have the timer set on Auto but lights are not on during the ON period. Also do I need to set times for all 7 periods?

No, you do not need to set all 7 timer events.
When event1 ON and event1 OFF are set, press CLOCK button to exit programming and save programs. Or press PROGRAM button and move to event2 ON and event2 OFF. Exit programming any time by pressing clock button.
http://www.intermatic.com/products/timers/consumer%20outdoor%20timers/digital%20timers/hb88rc.aspx

That being said, if events conflict with each other, timer will not operate.
For example event1 ON FR at 7pm and event1 OFF all-days at 11pm.
The days have to match for on-off times.

Another example event1 ON FR at 7pm and event1 OFF FR 11pm, but event2 ON all days 8pm event2 OFF all days 10pm. This overlap will cause timer to skip programs.

If timer is being used in random mode, timer programs cannot be closer than 1/2 hour apart.

When programming is done, press clock button to display current time.
Timer should be ready to go.
Manual is fuzzy at this point, and does not specifically say, but it appears that you only press MODE button when you want to set another mode beside auto.
I e-mailed Intermatic last week about this unclear spot because several folks are writing in about this timer not going into correct MODE after programs are set.
MODE must be set to automatic
Press MODE button once for manual override function
Press MODE again and RDM displays for random >> this is for lights turning on randomly when on vacation.
Press MODE button third time, and AUTO shows on display >> you want timer in AUTO for timer programs to operate.
Here's the trick ... after setting MODE to auto, press clock button to display current time

If timer will not enter AUTO, then timer is defective.
If Intermatic sends response that is pertinent to your question, I will post again on this thread.
Add a comment any time, and I will respond.

I have set program 1 on and off times and program 2 on and off times but do not know what mode to choose to get it to work!!

People are writing in with problems about HB88RC.
Problems seem to revolve around MODE button and setting automatic for timer to operate programming.

One guy said his timer skipped over automatic.
Another fellow today reported that timer programs would not work.

So maybe your timer has similar problem.
I'm going to e-mail Intermatic with recent information.
I need clarification on your exact question.
Intermatic generally e-mails back and is concerned with their products and customers.

That being said, let's look at your timer problem.
When you finish programming 1 and 2, press Clock button to exit programming and current time shows on display.
At this point, timer should function.

According to manual:
If you press MODE button once, timer will enter override, and lights will turn on.
Press MODE button again, RDM shows on screen and timer enters random mode and lights turn on-off randomly so it looks like folks are home.
Press MODE again and timer returns to Automatic and programs 1 and 2 should run.

Add a comment and let me know what is happening so I can report to Intermatic.
I will post results on this thread.

This is program1 OFF.
Press day button until choice of days shows for program1 OFF
Press hour until hour for program1 OFF shows
Press MIN until minute for program1 OFF shows.

step 3) Press PROG button until 2 and ON show on display
Repeat steps above to set program2 thru program7

step 4) When programs are set, press CLOCK button to return to current time

step 5) add a comment for more help
