Yikes, thats definitely a problem, so you can tell it isn't engaging all the way? Or it does go in all the way, but just doesn't work? It sounds like the "contact" or "sensor" may actually be bad, unless you are certain it is not closing all the way, in that case it could be just the hinge is the issue, or the door is warped. Can you tell which it may be?

Give me some more information here and I can help.

The door no longer pops open when the latch button is pushed. How do I fix this?

One of the door latch arms or the latching mechanism inside the oven have broken. you may have to buy a complete door lock / latching assembly . Might not be worth it. Check with your nearest parts supplier.

Can i myself fix microwave door switch

I would not recommend you to try & fix this yourself. Microwave ovens can hold a very high electrical charge even when unplugged which makes them dangerous to work on if you are not qualified to to so. The door latch will need to be adjusted from inside the unit & then must be tested to ensure there is no microwave leakage from the door seal to ensure it is safe to use. Take the oven to a recommended repair service centre.

My SMH4150 microwave appears to be working, but is not heating . It is 5 years old and there is a smell of burning plastic. Everything else seems fine.

Check the door safety interlock switches.

Do you regularly shut the machine off by opening the door? Each event causes a small arc on the tiny contacts and will burn them. When they can no longer make contact, your microwave doesn't know if the door is open or closed. The machine must know the door is closed to turn in the magnatron (that thing that makes the heat).

Remove the cover and check the microw switches with a volt/omh meter.

The push button on the door no longer opens the microwave. How can I get the door open? How can I fix this?

the only way to open a broken door lock if from the inside the unit,
but its far from an easy job, and if you done know what your doing insind the microwave my advice is,,, dont go in it,,,there will be 1000's of volts kicking about inside of this unit, one tuch in the wrong place and you may end up very dead! volts kill,, 1000; kill quicker
if its a good unit have it repaired, if its old buy a new one?

Tappan microwave turns on but will not heat at all....still cold after heading for several minutes.

Test your door safety interlock switches. If you are like me, you 'turn it off' by opening the door. This causes arcing at the little contact in these micro switches. Eventually, the contacts inside burn up and cannot make contact. If they cannot make contact, the machine doesn't know if the door is open or closed.

Unplug the machine - do not touch the silver thing inside - potentially lethal! - check with a volt-ohm meter. The switch should read "open" when the door is open and "closed" when the door is closed. If it reads open when the door is closed, the microwave doesn't know the door is closed so it will not turn on the magnatron.

Yes, everything else will work except the magnatron if this $10.00 switch is broken. Buy a replacement at a electronic parts or appliance place. Be ready to give make and model of your machine.

Let me know how this works for you.

Spacemaker II door latch problem

Most microwave ovens have catches that are shaped like hooks, these hooks catch on a fixed bolt or a raise in the frame of the oven.

The next time you get the oven open check these hooks to see if the springs are working in a strong positive manner, or if you have to push a button on the model check to see that the button releases the hooks.

Hope this helps.

Broken door hook

The plastic cover on the inside of the door is purely push fit.
To force it off I used 2 strong stainless steel dinner knives.
By easing one knife between the internal glass and the plastic cover I managed to spring one corner by using the other knife on the external bottom edge of the plastic cover.
Try concentrating on one end and once this springs out it is easy to free the rest without having to take it off completely.
The hook is simple to do but be careful with the spring.
All in all it took 3 minutes!

It is possible that the magnatron is bad but hard to say on a no heat problem without checking all components. A lot of model give 5-7 yr warranty on that part.

Microwave door

It sounds like the mount which holds tension on your door latch heads (door hooks) is broken. You can confirm that by pushing up on the door hook. If it goes up with no real resistance, the spring is unhooked. Fixing that would require disassembly of the door (by separating the panels) and repairing or replacing either the door hook assembly or the door panel inside.
