Question about Acer Aspire One Netbook 8.9" Notebook

1 Answer

Hello, I have a problem with my Acer Aspire One. The charger is damaged and won't charger so I bought a replacement one. However, when i tried plugging the cable that goes in the wall plug to the other part of the charger it just threw a sparke and it won't work. How can I solve this problem? Is the replacement charger faulty or is it a different type of charger that does not suit my laptop? The seller said it should work on all acer laptops. Thank you in advance!

First of all, you need to make sure your power adapter is providing enough power to both run the laptop & charge the battery. A very good way to do this is to compare your laptop voltage & ampere requirements (written on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop) with the voltage & ampere ratings of the power adapter. Voltages should be the same, or the power adapter's voltage about up to 0.5 volts more than the laptop's voltage rating. Amperage of the power adapter should be at least equal to or greater than the laptop's rating. It should never be less than the laptop's rating, or else the power adapter will be providing insufficient amperes to charge the battery. Of course, the power adapter's nominal amperage might be ok, but it degraded on usage. You can verify this by testing using a good or new power adapter.
If the battery did not charge using the new power adapter, take the battery off the laptop, & using a dry tooth brush, scrub in between the fins of the battery connector on the motherboard & on the battery it self, then put the battery back into the laptop & try again.
If this still did not resolve the problem, then the battery itself could be bad. Try it on another laptop, or try a good or new battery in your laptop.
If this did not work, there might be a possibility that the charging circuitry on the laptop's motherboard is defective & needs servicing. In order to do this, the laptop needs to be disassembled & the motherboard checked for defective/burned out components in the area near the DC jack. Any defective/burned out components found should be replaced, or you might need to replace the laptop's motherboard altogether.

thats not what i meant. the laptop and the battery are really fine, its the charger thats faulty. i guess it happened over time, the part where the laptop jack is kept losing contact, so i stripped down the rubber and fixed it, but of course you cant expect it to work like that forever. after that i got a new charger, but without the wall cable if you know what i mean. so when it arrived, i plugged the cable into the wall (the one from the original charger) and into the new charger. what happened is, at the place where the 2 cables connect it sparked and it immediately threw out the security power switch. what could be wrong with the replacement charger? is it faulty or is it just too different from the original one? its the replacement charger for the aspire one. i dont know much about electricity so any help will be great since i really dont feel like buying ANOTHER charger if i REALLY dont need to since im a student and therefore automaticly poor =D thank you in advance!!! xo

Sounds like the cable that connects the charger to the wall outlet is defective (most probably shorted out). If you have a digital multimeter, you can test it.
Anyway, I strongly believe that you need to replace this cable.

Acer aspire m5 won't charge

it sounds like one of three things:

1. Battery itself no longer functions
2. Laptop Charger has inadequate amperage
3. The motherboard is defective (most likely).

If you have another battery, or a friend with the same battery, you can try that first (and someone else's laptop charger).

If the problem is the motherboard, you can try to have it repaired but I don't trust many companies to do this kind of work. I outsource my motherboard jobs to a company called Laptop Rescue (http://www.laptoprescue.com/laptop-repair-2/). Coincidentally, they also sell laptop chargers in case that's the problem. Hopefully it's just a charger or battery issue and not a motherboard.

Remove the battery and plug in the Cord/charger, will it boot? If no, try another Cord/Charger with the EXACT same power specs. Replace battery if necessary.

My acer aspire 7520-5185 will not turn on

Hello. There is a hardware failure with the laptop not the AC charger. AC chargers have some range of protections of their own. If the power requirements of the laptop are bigger then what the charger can handle, the charger will turn off. Also other parameters can bring the charger offline. In your case, you have a problem with a small chip, the battery charge controller unit, witch regulates the amount of current required to propperly charge the battery. When this thing fails, the charging requirements for the battery are reported rong and the AC charger is forced to give more power then necesary. This results in disconnection of the AC charger ( an internal fail safe of the
AC charger) and the laptop to swich back to battery power. When the laptop is turned off, it can charge the battery because the power requirements are low, having all processor, main board, hard disk etc turned off. Therefore the AC charger can handle the load. However you will need to have it checked by a service center as it is a hardware fault. Both AC charger and laptop needs that check.
The charge controll circuit needs to be replaced probably. It will be a somewhat expensive repair. Don't buy any other battery untill you have the laptop checked.

My acer aspire 5738 charge only works when i toggle the charger head and if i move the laptop it stops charging, i bought the laptop second hand 2 months ago. thanks in advance for any advice given :-)

The DC jack, where you plug the power adapter cable, might be loose or defective, & needs to be either re-soldered or replaced.
In order to do this, the laptop needs to be disassembled & the motherboard taken out. Also, the motherboard needs to be checked for defective/burned out components in the area near the DC jack. Any defective/burned out components found should be replaced, or you might need to replace the laptop's motherboard altogether.

Alternatively, the charger wire just next to the charger head might be damaged.
Some wire has frayed apart and is making intermittent contact with itself. This could be fixed by either replacing the charger with a new one, or replacing the charger head & the few centimeters of the wire connecting it to the charger & re-soldering a new charger head instead.

Problems with new laptop battery for my Acer 6920G.

You can't force the battery with a higher charge to work without damaging the computer. If the battery is a direct replacement it should work. If your original charger is not capable of charging the battery you can consider a charger replacement but I suspect the original charger you where using was bad to begin with if that is the case. You can try locating a replacement charger but you need to make sure it is rated for computer so you don't damage the power system.

Usually when you see this flashinf indicator it is a failing battery. IT maybe that some of the cells in the battery are failing and refusing to accept a charge, in that case the battery will actually damage the charger.
