Must ajust carb to a richer setting after warmup, then readjust when cold. Help!

What are you trying to do. There is no actual cold setting that a carb would be set to. Cold running is either by choke or bypass enrichment system.

Set the mixture correctly for normal operating temprature, and leave it alone.

When you make a direct connection, what? You are dealing with water and electricity, do not jeoporadize the integrity of the unit by changing wiring around, this is really bad, how is the unit set up, is it cold water coming in or hot make sure its cold water coming in.

Usually, if you go up one size on the slow jet and readjust the idle mixture this solves the problem. I think you bike came equipped with a #42 slow jet. Go up to a #45, the next step richer. If you have not drilled and removed the "anti-tamper plug" that covers the idle mixture adjusting screw, do so. Be careful not to damage the screw as they are not available seperately from Harley. This will enrichen the low speed mixture just a bit.

You can also remove the needle from the slide and install a 3 mm flat washer that is about 0.020" thick on the needle to raise it up just a bit to enrichen the midrange just a bit.

Also, check your accelerator pump for proper operation.

2008 1200 custom runs rich on intial start up than has a rough idle . performance is good after warmup can i retune to smooth out the idle when warm .


check the fittings at the cold start lever on the carb,it might need ajusting,if air filter is chocked it will run rough,

Engine idling rpm is erratic when cold. low power during startup. fuel mixture is very rich.


ajust your mixture screw on your carb turn it in fully then unturn two and half turns that should get your mixture ok you mat need to fine ajust later

Turn the idle mixture screw 1 1/2 turns out from being seated. Then with the engine running in gear under a load in the water turn slowly clockwise. When it starts to die then go a half turn counter clockwise. That is your correct fuel mixture and you should readjust it anytime you have a change in altitude.

try ajusting carb did get better.if no rebuild carb and ajust carb again should fix your problem low needle 1 turn out and high needle 1 1/2 turns out this will get it runing and you might ajust again run full throttle to ajust high needle.let me know if this help you.ok

Yamaha 570 exciter..wont start or run when cold


You need a richer mixture than normal in a cold engine. It sounds like your machine is too lean on the idle circuit. Turn the air screw in on each carb to richen it up. Also, verify the choke is working properly.

Carb settings


Hi Stephen,
Its simple , just remove the air filter clean it and check the spark plug and reset it to its right specs the gap.
Locate the air-mixture screw on the carb and warmup thebike's engine.
Turn the air-mixture screw in tothe last , but very slowly as to not damage it as its very sharp at the end of it, at this point increase the idling a little thn turn the air-mixture screw outwards 1 and a half turns and you will notice the difference in the engine , it may rev a little higher and be stable , here you will have to reduce the idling speed and again try to readjust the air-mixture screw outwards a little or inwards alittle depends how the engine responds.
