Open Question

On a BNCHMARK DLT1 SCSI tape drive, the clean media light continually blinks. Multiple uses of cleaning tape and reset has no effect. Any ideas?

Not accept the new tape clean tape drive

Your question is not very clear.

Is the drive not accepting a new tape or is it not accepting a new cleaning tape?

LTO Cleaning tapes have a life span of between 20 and 50 cleans and once they go above this they expire and do not work again. I suggest you try using a brand new cleaning tape to try the cleaning cycle again and then try your backup again with a brand new tape too. This should eliminate all your media from you list of problems.

If the Superloader continues to either reject tapes or the cleaning light / alert persists then i am afraid it will need to be sent for repair as it is likely the read write heads will need replacement / service.

Visit the link below and they should be able to help and offer a full warranty too.

See Table 13 and 15.

The '6' means the drive detected a drive or media error. With only the Single Character Display it can't get specific. Follow the directions except I would highly recommend you run a Clean Cart first.

Handle your media carefully and keep them from experiencing any changes in temperature or humidity, say, on that trip to Iron Mountain. Alway open the slide door on the cartridge to examine the leader's proper positon before you use the tape or especially before you introduce it into any robotic environment. Dropped tapes will jam in or kill tape drives, always in the middle of the night. An ounce of prevention.

The STT320000A is IBM version? some IBM version STT320000A will rewind the tape when inserted. But It can recognize the media after rewind. If can't, try to used the cleaning cartridge or change one new media. regards

Sounds a bit strange - I've seen this happen when tapes are re-used in a different drive but not when re-used in the same drive. You could try degaussing (magnetically wiping) the tapes. This should effectively make them appear as new ones.

SONY LIB-81 Error on LCD screen - Drive Information 51

I think this sounds like the drive is having a issue loading and moving the tape in slot 1.
AIT units are known for having this kind of problem.
Try a cleaning tape and then a new tape fresh out the wrapper for a test backup.

if it fails with a known good tape then its time to send it out for repair

Constant Cleaning of new PowerVault 100T DAT72

Tape drives do need cleaning frequently and the 'auto clean' facility may not be enough. The problem is the continuous shedding of oxide needs cleaning right off and the auto system may not be enough. What you need is a back-up Drive. and the out of service drive needs physically stripping down to clean all off using a soft brush and where appropriate coproponal alcohol
