To change the Media (sand, or zeolite sand replacement) you have to remove the top off the filter. There is a clamp that holds the top on. This is held together with two screws. If this is a top mount backwash valve you will have to remove the backwash valve. If you are lucky the person who installed it will have used unions so you can easily remove and replace it. If not you will have to cut pipes and re-plumb them when your done. If this is a side mount backwash valve then you should be just removing a top lid. Once you remove the top you can access the sand. You do not want to add sand without taking the old media out, and it doesn't do much good to replace only a portion of the sand. The label on the filter will tell you how much you need. Make sure you use #20 silica Pool Sand, and not any other type of sand. You can use Zeobest Zeolite sand replacement if you want a better filtration media. It cost a little more than twice the cost of sand, but you use half as much. It will filter better than cartridges, and almost as good as DE filters. You will want to "recharge" the media about once a year. this entails soaking the media in a solution overnight, then backwashing very well (another reason to use unions for the top). Hope this helps. If you need further assistance post a reply in the comments, and don't hesitate to leave good thumb rating if you found this helpful. Thanks, and good Luck!

When to replace sand filter medium

This is sort of a two-fold answer, as I am not exactly certain if you are referring to replacing the sand filter media itself or the sand.

Most manufacturers will tell you that the sand filter media itself is a permanent media filter. The only reason to throw the filter away would be after the sand calcifies into a solid block of concrete. The industry has spent 40 years telling the professional industry that sand is forever. Sand media is forever and you never have to change it.

However... this is what Hayward Pools is telling their customers:

On average, sand should be replaced every 3-5 years. The jagged edges of the sand wear down and become smooth as the sand ages. When this happens the sand can no longer trap debris particles and dirt can pass through the sand and back into the pool. As the sand ages, it may start to clump and the water flow can form channels in the sand, allowing the debris to pass through.

I have also talked with several others who believe what Hayward is saying, that basically every 3-5 years it should be changed. We have a strong belief in what Hayward says.

Hope that helps.

After changing the sand in the filter, i back washed the system, then i put it on rinse for about 30 seconds. then changed it to filter. after that, it shot outr some sand. so i did the procedure again and...

It sounds to me like your pool filters multi-port valve was not put on correctly after you put the new sand in. Since I can't see your particular filter, I would recommend that you read the section in the users manual about reassembling the valve after you have changed the media. Follow the step by step guide and you should be able to get it back on correctly.

I have an Hayward Pro Series S244T filter and I have had problems with sand blowing back into pool - the filter is only 2 years old

When sand returns to the pool, there is a hole in either the media or the sieve that is supposed to keep the sand in the filter.
All of the sand must come out of the filter, the sieve at the bottom (outlet of the filter) must be removed and any broken segments must be replaced.
The sand is then returned.

How to change sand in sand filter top mount

Remove the flange at the top of the media canister to separate it from the pump housing. Make sure to keep the O-ring in a safe place or you'll have a big mess when you put it back together.

How much sand to i put in my Hayward Sand Filter?

It depends on the model of filter you have. You didn't indicate what model you have. Here is a link to a manual from Hayward. If your model is not in this manual, then look further on this site as they have all models available.

I need to change the lateral holder assembly and bottom screen on a Hayward S-200 sand filter. Will I need to remove the variflow valve or will it just come right out?

You will need to remove multiport valve and remove all the sand with a scoop. Not alot of fun. Think about replacing sand with ZeoBrite filter medium when you put it back together
