I have the same model machine with the same problem!

The shaft of the bobbin winder 'froze' (apparently from old or incorrect lubrication). When it froze, it's rubber wheel (which they call a 'ring'') that is driven off the back of the main hand wheel (to the left of the winder) developed a flat spot, so it also had to be replaced. (Enter the machine model number at /www.searspartsdirect.com to see how it fits together. Their exploded parts diagrams are excellent.)

Two screws hold the top cover on the machine, and two screws hold the bobbin winder to the underside of the cover. Note that the winder assembly mounts are slotted, so when reassembling, the winder must be adjusted to engage with the drive wheel. (Note its old position.)

You might be able to use a penetrating oil to clean the bearing without dis-assembly of that shaft from the bearing, but that didn't work for me.

I tried to get a whole new bobbin winder (Sears pt # 214458), as well as a new ring (Sears pt # 61662). but Sears no longer stocks that.

I found the ring cheapest at http://www.a1sewingmachine.com, but they no longer had the winder.

I found both parts at http://sewingmachine221sale.bizland.com/store/page21.html, but before the order arrived, I was able to repair the old one, so if the winder does arrive I'll have it as a spare.

I made a fixture to remove the press-fit wheel (that mounts the ring) from the shaft, so I could clean and re-lube the shaft bearing. I used a lathe to drill a 8mm hole > 40 mm into the end of a 1/2 in. aluminum rod, and mounted the rod in a press, and used a 3/16 steel pin to push the shaft out of the wheel. Clamping the rod in a vise and using a pin punch /hammer might also work, but it was very hard to separate them, so that might not work.

When lubricating the shaft/bearing of the winder, be sure to use a good quality sewing machine oil. I've had bad experiences with bearings like this lubed with generic oil (like 3-in-one oils) which gummed things up in a very short time.

Good luck

If you don't want to pay for a service call, you can purchase a handy implement (a stand-alone bobbin winder) for about $30 at the local fabric store or online.

My Kenmore Sewing Machine Model #1217 Wont wind Bobbin

These are durable machines. Suggest removing the top and inspect the bobbin winder. The winder tire may have failed and need to be replaced.

If the tire is intact confirm that the shaft is free to turn and does not require lubrication.

Two screws secure the top and will require removing to access the winder.

It is douhtful that the hardware has failed.

Hope this helps?

Kenmore by sears model 1581457180 need a manual or a how to thread the bobbin

hi there,
on my manual 1581 kenmore show figure on how you thread your bobbins and upper thread.
to thread bobbin insert the thread on one hole of winder holding thread and rotate thread on counter clockwise rotation several times, loop the thread on tension thread and insert bobbins winder on winder shaftat top of your sewing machine push the latch to lock bobbin winder
pull the handwheel to disengage the clutch and to move the winder free rotation.
press the foot pedal to run your winder and thread your bobbins be sure on counterclock wise rotation.
if winder is full of thread this will automatically disengage the shafting winder from clutch.

I have a Kenmore as well ,I hope that this will work for you ,too bad that I don't live close to you otherwise I would give a hand. This is the way I fill the bobbin on mine. Mine is located on the top right ,I put the thread into the bobbin hole leaving a small piece of thread hanging for me to hold when I begin the winding, I pull the wheele out to stop the needle from moving while winding, when I am done just push it back in .I run the thread from the spool into the top left it looks like a U turn with a screw go around that without winding just pull it into the bobbin hole. press the foot control and it will begin winding .
