Hi, its not good news im afraid the reason it shuts down and gives you a ref light is due to damage being done to the circuit board inside the ps3.
it could be that it has over heated which is often the case this could be down to dust build up or if the heat sink paste on the gpu and cpu chip has gone brittle or if you have been using the ps3 on carpet or in top of anything else that gives off heat such as dvd or sky box, these cause it to over heat really quick.

right now you have a couple of options if you have any warranty left take it back and get a refund if your warranty has run out then you could try getting it repaired but their is no guarantee the repair will work or how long it will work after the reapir.

as you have got the red light this does mean the console has over heated and their is a fault with the board so its not going to work again the way it is.

now i repair these for 25 quid plus parts so you need to look around if you want it repaired and see what the best price you can get.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

SOURCE: playstation 3 switches off and red light flashes

Sadly this is what is known as the Yellow Light of Death (YLOD). This indicates a general hardware failure normally due to overheating. When these PS3's were produced Sony decided to use lead free solder. The problem with lead free solder is that it is not as flexible as leaded solder but it is cheaper and more environmentally friendly. When the console gets hot and cools down hairline cracks appear within these solder joints and a good electrical contact cannot be made. This then causes the console to fail. It could be on a number of different components including the CPU, GPU or memory. There is a temporary cure that may or may not work but ultimately the console will need to be repaired professionally or replaced. If it is out of warranty Sony will not replace it but will offer a refurbished unit for around £130. If you look on Youtube for Yellow light of death fix there is a way that you can re-heat the solder joints using a heat gun but if you are not confident taking apart electrical items then this really may not be something you want to try.

I am sorry I cant give you any better news but unfortunately it is a very common problem with the PS3

Hope this helps

SOURCE: My playstation won't switch on. The red light

hey there alison

If you have the red blinking light then you have the RED light of death AKA the RLOD.

The light is a warning sign to let you know something is wrong. I can give you the quick explanation, There are 2 chips on the motherboard inside the PS3, the GPU (graphics) and the CPU (brain), when playing the ps3 the solder heats up and when you finish playing it cools down, over time this will cause the soldering to crack and the chips to lose connection with the motherboard and you get the RLOD.

WHERE TO GO FROM HERE

Option 1 - Call Sony

In warranty the Price is Free, out of warranty the Price is $150, the whole process is 4-6 weeks

You can call Sony and they will collect the PS3, repair/replace, and deliver the PS3 back to you

Option 2 - Fix it your Self

You can use a PS3 fix manual to get this fixed easily and at home using household tools you probably already own.

Click Here For The PS3 Manual which has helped so many people like you.

Good luck

Best regards

Peter

Flashing red light will not eject game

if you turn it on, and it goes green then yellow then beeps 3 times and flashes red, then your ps3 has overheated and been damaged. you can fix it with the heat gun trick, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Ic1_TY-GU

but it will only break again.

try flipping the switch in the back, then hold the eject button while you flip the switch back on, that should eject the disc.

The playstation 3 just turns off and the red

Over heating, I myself had this problem, A good fix is to get some Caned Air and blowout any dust that is in the playstation via the side front and rear ports.

This could be any of a number of problems try these solutions one of which may work. If they all fail to work you can contact sony directly at:

http://www.uk.playstation.com/Support/PS3
or
http://www.us.playstation.com/help-support/PS3
  • Remove any obstructions from the vents.
  • Allow at least 4 inches of clearance on all sides for the PLAYSTATION 3.
  • Remove the PLAYSTATION 3 from any cabinets so it is out in the open.
  • Shut the PLAYSTATION 3 down completely and let it cool down to room temperature, then try running it again.
  • If the fan cannot be heard before the system shut down, the PLAYSTATION 3 may need to be sent in for service.
  • If there is no airflow from any of the vents, the system may need to be sent in for service
Hope this helps.
