Question about Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 Video Card Graphic

3 Answers

I have a GeFORCE FX 5200 PCI card, and onboard graphics. I had to restore my system, and cannot find the user manual. If it was available online, I'd follow the steps myself, but I'll settle for a quick step-by-step. I know I need to somehow disable the onboard graphics, plug the card in, and load the drivers, but not necessarily in that order. Thank you.

Any specific way to tell my computer "use THIS, and not THAT?" What happens is the computer's BIOS and Loading Windows XP screens will display through the card, but windows will not. (I can hear it starting, but the screen is blank), or I will see nothing until Windows starts up if I have the monitor plugged into the onboard video. I am not seeing anything about in the manuals you're linking to.

This happened after I uninstalled the driver software. I was practicing as part of studying for the A+. Stupid, I know, but it's the truth. There's nothing wrong with the device and I have the original install CD. The manual, which is somewhere in a closet 300 miles away from me, really does say something about uninstalling or disabling existing onboard video. Exactly what, or how, I do not recall.

Thank you both for trying, really. What I was looking for was the solution here:http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/ind...

I am confident to say I was able to resolve the issue entirely on my own.

You need to plug the card in first for you, you need help doing that? If so let me know...

Then you need to go into the BIOS of your computer, probably DELETE key right when you start up. Under integrated components you will have the onboard video where you can change it to disabled.

The drivers are from Nvidia.. they have a utility that will identify which ones you need and get them for you... you can use that here:

http://www.nvidia.com/content/DriverDownload-March2009/confirmation.php?url=.xoxgo.com&lang=us&type=GeForce

What make / model computer is this, I can probably get you the manual as well.

Let me know and I can help further,

Tim

Hi.

You do not necessarily need to disable the built in graphic adapter, the computer can manage two different adapters.
The nVidia should show picture with standard VGA definition (800x600 only) if simply connected to the AGP or PCI slot even if drivers are not installed, and even if built in GPU is not disabled.
If there is no picture, check installation in slot, check that card is not disabled in BIOS, check video cable is well connected, and if nothing works, test the video adapter on different PC, the card may be faulty.

Here the manuals:

    Hi.

There is nothing in the manuals because as mentioned this is not a driver problem.

You said:"What happens is the computer's BIOS and Loading Windows XP screens will display through the card, but windows will not."

Since you are in above situations there are three possibilities:

1 GeForce is set in a way that is not compatible with the monitor.

    • Start the computer in safe mode by pressing F8.

    • If GF does not work in safe mode, that is bad sign, in safe mode settings are at minimum in safe mode. IF GForge does not work in Windows use onboard and proceed the same.

    • Go to properties and ensure in properties you operate on the Geforge, you will need to select proper adapter from the box with two monitors (see manuals).

    • Set everything to the minimum just to test, 256 color 800x600 or similar. Ensure you have set the GF and not the onboard. Ensure you press OK.

    • Restart connecting the GF and see if it works
2 There is hardware conflict with other devices.

Go to device manager (control panel-system properties), and in there click properties on each adapter. See troubleshooting button and resources tab, if there is a problem, it will be reported.
Eventually you can try clicking on the onboard adapter with the right mouse button and choosing disable, then restart with the PC connecting to GF.

3 The driver used is wrong,

Download the latest nVidia drivers:Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers.

4 If you get here and problem is still not solved, then the nVidia GeForge hardware is probably defective.

If you think my comments are helpful, then please do not forget to rate the solution.

    Best regards.

    Ginko.

    Hi.

To start, sorry about your decision. Since you decide to pass the solution to a different expert (automatically leav ing bad feedback), I have wasted all this time on your problem for nothing.
The solution is now passed to other (thanks mate).

About your problem, I just told you how to disable the on board adapter from device manager, there is no arcane mistery in the user manual. Read my previous comment and disable the device if you want. By disabling it you will not fix the problem unless problem is conflict between peripherals.

There are HUNDREDS of manual about compatible GeForge built with nVidia chipset, nVidia ones are those up there. There is nothing in the user manual that I could not explain myself.

Good luck with the other experts, sorry about me wastig of time on this problem. The ask to other expert button is really a problem for us.

If this happened after uninstalling drivers, then problem is either driver
or Windows system. In both cases easy solution.Ask to other experts, I already
    gave here.

    Take care.

There is no need for behaving this way Feedback given to experts do not affect your rights to refund.

To clarify with you the version of Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 that you have has both a standard DVI and VGA port or just one or the other. I ask because there are several versions.

If you have one that has both and you have not tried connecting to the other port I would try that. I have setup server systems with the same hardware and even though you many have not used the other port on the last install of Windows this time around Windows is wanting to use that port as the primary port.

After you get the drivers installed then you can resign the primary output to the port that your want.

Note as long as the Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 is installed you can install the drivers with the monitor connected to the onboard. After the install the system will ask to be rebooted. At this point you will be able to connect to the Geforce card.

If you need the drivers for your Geforce you can download them from this link.

According to this page,
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00771728&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en#N83

Unless you added parts, or got a different variation of the computer, the A1632X has two available PCI slots and one available PCI Express x16

I'm the GF FX 5200 only came in AGP and PCI packages, the PCI Express model was label as a 5300.

If you have the PCI version, it should work. If you have the AGP version, there is no slot for it in the A1632X

PNY GeForce FX 5200 PCI 256 MB

http://www.geforce.com/drivers

Here you have an auto detect applet. You need to have Java in order to work. this will identify your graphic card and lead you to driver download.

if not, you can manually download it from here:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

choose GeForce 5 Fx Series and your operating system.

after that, you will be presented with a page and download button for the driver suite.

run, install, next...next.. next until finish, then you are done.

You may be prompted to restart your PC to finish installation.

Nvidia v-vard

First, look at the card and make sure it's actually an Nvidia Geforce FX 5200. Of so, then you probably installed the wrong drivers for the card. Make sure you go to the Nvidia website and download the correct drivers for the card after deleting the ones already installed. Installing the incorrect drivers could cause Windows to report the wrong type of card is installed in your PC.
