Various reasons, really. None of them good. They may smoke because everyone they know smokes, or because it seems cool at first then they get addicted to it. They may think it helps keep them slim or concentrate better or relax. They may have had parents that smoked and became addicted by inhaling second-hand smoke. They all amount to being either out of control or hopelessly ignorant of the Fact that it is Known to Kill you. SMOKING IS FAIL:( Good question, Farmerbear at

First time I plugged in the Rowenta Steam Iron, all of my hard-wired electrical smoke alarms went off. Does it require an adapter in the USA?

check the iron's label and see what voltage its rated for. If its from over seas and you are in the states with it, you will be wise to buy another iron. The adapter you would need is called a step up transformer and it would need to be large. 2000w or so. An iron would be much cheaper.

The label will say 240z 50hz or 110 60hz. if it says 110 60hz then you have another problem.

I plugged my max 110 V Oliso iron into our house's only 220 V outlet. Smoke is being emitted and it is unusable (The iron, not iron). Can someone please tell me how to fix it?

are you saying that the iron works with 110 volts and you plugged it in a 220 volts outlet??? if so then the voltage is to high for the iron (luckily it didn't get burnt) but all you need to do is plug it into a 110 volt outlet

My iron exploded when I plugged it in. How can it be fixed?

You have a short in the wiring inside of the iron. It will not work until you get the short fixed.

Cleaning a Steam Iron Soleplate

Ironed on synthetic fabric by mistake and fabric melted on the iron soleplate. How can we clean it off? Please Help! Thank you

You could turn the iron on again - set to cotton or highest setting and allow it to completely burn off. Do this outdoors or well ventilated area indoors (no smoke detectors on!)

Or, you could warm the iron and use a plastic putty knife to scrape as much material from the iron as possible. A metal knife will scratch and mar the surface. When cool, use a scotchbrite pad to buff away remaining deposits on the iron.

Good luck!
