Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

It could be the pump is bound up but it is more likely the motor is failing. It may be a small part such as the capacitor or the starting switch, but could also be more severe such as the winding itself. You will also want to examine the shaft where it passes thru the pump and motor and look for signs of rust from a pump seal leak.

If you are not familiar with testing these parts your best bet would be a local electric motor repair shop to see if the motor can be repaired or if it would need to be replaced. They should also be able to ensure there is no pump damage.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Most of the time its the start capacitor or a dirty start switch. the start switch can be cleaned with the striker off a match book use CARE not to bend the switch , the switch is in contact when motor is starting and open when running... look for free pool pump motor testing in you area and see if they can test the cap for ya as it requires a special meter to do THE TEST RIGHT ! and you might need a shaft seal when all is done. good luck// jay the pool pump repair guy FLORIDA

Just to clarify, you don't want to sand or file down the points on the start switch. they are factory plated, and this will remove the plating causing early failure. Some blackening or pitting is normal after motor has been used. If you do sand them or already have, it will work temporarily, but can quickly deteriorate and fail again, and the switch should be replaced. You can however clean them by sliding a piece of thin cardboard or paper bag between them, but be careful not to bend them. You can test the switch with an ohmmeter by attaching one lead to each
switch terminal. Ohmmeter reading should be 0. Flip governor weight to running position. Reading should now be infinity.

YES THIS IS TRUE WITH POINTS SAY ON A CAR OR A TRUCK,YOU WOULD USE A DOLLAR BILL FOR CLEANING, THIS IS HOW YOU CLEAN THEM BUT THESE MOTOR POINTS HAVE A GOOD COAT OF SILVER AND CAN BE LIGHTLY SANDED MANY TIMES. , YES A FILE IS A NO NO AND WAS INTENDED FOR EMERGENCY USE . BUT WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU SEEN A SET OF CAR OR TRUCK POINTS !

@MotorWizJ... Actually points on a car or truck are fine to sand or file down. The information I gave is directly from AOSmith Motor Mastery University Troubleshooting guide. The only "light sanding" AOSmith recommends is that from a paper bag, or thin cardboard. Did not mean to turn this into a pissing match, but simply inform you and the requester that AOSmith specifically says what you recommended should not be done. And also provide the proper way to test the Start switch. If you do not believe me I recommend you contact AOSmith directly

macdirk JUST SO YOU KNOW ,SANDING CAR POINTS.IS A NO NO , IT KNOCKS OFF THE TUNGSTEN CARBIDE AND WILL CAUSE THE POINTS TO FAIL (PIT) YOU CAN READ ALL THE BOOKS YOU WANT , ITS HERE IN THE REAL WORLD (EXPERIENCE) COUNTS! 1000'S N 1000'S OF MOTORS U ?... TRY YOUR FILE TRICK WITH A FARMERS TRACTOR. " YOU DID WHAT"
macdirk GO SELL CRAZY SOMEWHERE ELSE I'M ALL STOCKED UP HERE

@ motorwizj, Yes I can see your all stocked up with crazy, I'll concede to that. If your filing the points on pool motors, it's no wonder you've done thousands, and thousands, they keep failing. By the way how many thousands? 10 thousand 20 thousand? 300 thousands. And I don't drive a tractor, nor was I talking about one. I don't just read books, but I like to be educated as well, which is why follow the changes the manufacturers make to their products, Train on new products, and I do go by manufacturers procedures where it's prudent. No I have not serviced thousands, and thousands, of motors. hundreds yes, but since you've serviced thousands, upon thousands, with respect I'll bow out and let the old tractor farmer have his moment.

WOW YER SO BOOK SMART IT'S SCARY . I REPAIR MOTORS IN FLORIDA 365 DAY A YEAR, SO YA I HAVE NO CLUE, TO MY READERS TRYING TO GET THERE PUMP UP AND RUNNING. NEVER FILE POINTS. TO CLEAN THERE POINTS ON THERE POOL PUMP MOTOR, USE THE STRIKER OFF A MATCH BOOK ITS SUPER FINE AND WILL NOT DAMAGE THE POINTS.

make sure you make a wiring diagram or just unplug the plug from the mother board and search your area for your local pool pump repair guy with free testing. these are a high $$$ motor and not a good one to practice on, save it for a pro ! it might just be a dirty switch or need to be reset I don't charge any thing for that, and while your there ask him how to take better care of your $$$ pump ?

I would suggest 50lbs. If you filled it to capacity, it greatly reduces your water flow.

When I turn it on it just makes a loud humming noise. Any ideas?? Thanks

Check to see if you can turn by hand, Open housing and do this. Turn on and see if you can spin it and make it start(CAREFUL) If it won't turn ether when off or while it has power going to it, UH-OH! it's time for a new motor. If it will turn and starts when you spin it, it is probably just a start capacitor. Good luck.

I have a 18 year old dura-glas pool pump. Recently, when turned on, the pump sometimes just 'hums' for about 3-4 seconds, then starts. The pump is primed and does not leak. There are no obstructions...

SOUNDS LIKE THE START SWITCH IS DIRTY OR IT MAY NEED A CAPACITOR it's a 161start cap THIS IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST PUMP YOU CAN HAVE ! THESE AS ALL PUMPS CAN BE TRICKY TO WORK ON, THIS COULD HAVE THE MOTOR REPAIRED WITH NEW BEARINGS AND A SHAFT SEAL AND DIFFUSER ALL FOR ABOUT 100.00 .. LOOK FOR YOUR LOCAL POOL PUMP MOTOR REPAIR GUY OR SHOP.. USE YOUR ZIP CODE IN YOUR SEARCH .. GOOD LUCK AND VOTE .. Jay

Lock the shaft at the end where you electrical connections are made (disconnected of course!) and spin it off counterclockwise.
