Question about Western Digital Computers & Internet

2 Answers

Hi I have a Western Digital Elements backup harddrive . I installed it on Tuesday , worked on my machine yesterday and today the drive is not being recognized by my pc. I rebooted, unplugged and replugged the device and see nothing mapping a drive to it. Also, how do I set it up (access the panel also) to setup automatic daily backup of my harddrive.

Hookup that hard drive to another computer. If it works then that means there is a problem with the ports on your computer. If the drive doesn't work on another computer, then that means the drive is bad and would need to be replaced. Let me know the exact model number of your hard drive and then I can explain to you how to setup automatic daily backups of your hard drive.

Hello

My apologies if this message finds you long after posting this problem , but I am currently working through a backlog of problems that never got answered and hopefully this info can still be of use if not now possibly in future.

Please download Disc Digger HERE. This is a free tool you can use that works very well and there is no installation required, just run the program once you downloaded it.

Once you have connected the memory disk / hdd to the computer , run the program.

On the program , select the dig deep option for accidentally deleted files or dig deeper for a formatted drive. Then select the disk you want to do the recovery on and run the program.

The data will be displayed and you can recover it from there. This will only work if the card has not been used since the data was lost. Save the files to a location on the computer hard drive and not back to the disk it is recovering from as this will overwrite the other pictures that still needs to be recovered.

Some of the properties of the files may become lost in the recovery but the pictures should be fine.

You will also only be able to recover certain file types using this method.

Feel free to ask if you need more assistance.

Kind Regards
Andrea

1. Try to use a different USB Cable and test. 2. Open the external harddrive and replace the disk with a spare one or working one. Then test if it connects. a. If it does not connect then the problem is the electronic board of the external harddrive. Buy a Harddrive enclosure so as you could still use and retrieve your valuable data. Or slave the drive on your desktop computer and see if its connect. b. If it connects then you have a faulty harddrive. I hope you have a backup of what you have there.

Hard drive backup

If it is out of warranty,, then you can crack the case open and remove the hard drive. Once removed if you are familiar with PC work you can install the HDD into your PC, and it should let you see what you are looking for IF it is going to be salvageable.

The other option is to get a unit like this

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2477926&CatId=3770

This will allow you to connect directly to the hard drive, and possibly retrieve is contents.

If neither of these options works then it is likely a hard drive failure, sometimes the bearings go, or a bad knock, or power surge will just total them out.

I am crossing my fingers for you!

Hope this helps, Good Luck!!!

No power to external harddrive

Yes, without a doubt!

I highly recommend sending it back for repairs or replacement. Most are covered under a 6 month warranty depending on the deal, and the country you are in as well. And computer shops don't generally fix things like External Drives, since they are not as a important part of a PC, but as a backup or storage device.

Good luck mate.

The port of my Western Digital Passport damaged

You can open the case, and access the harddrive inside it. I found there are videos explaining the process on youtube. You can also find some info on Google. You'd then need either a USB SATA adapter, or a desktop computer with a SATA port that's not already occupied. Search for: western digital passport open case

If you clear/format the external and you have whatever program you are using to backup, it will start backing up again. Make sure you do not delete any critical files you have backed up before wiping it.

Western digital passport essential harddrive 250 gig

It assumes that the drive C is the drive you booted from or the "root" drive. You must make it something other than "C". Try putting in a camera card, hooking up an external drive or other device that the computer makes drive "C" THEN hook up your passport. It will be "D" or "G" or something other than "C" and it will work.
