Hello there, sorry to hear about your hard drive problem, that's a nasty one for sure. Do you know, is this the eSATA version of this drive? Do you have it physically connected to the computer in question? So the computer sees it but says it needs to format the drive? Is that correct?

Unfortunately this is a very bad sign, it means the drive or the drive container has failed. Do you have another computer you can try hooking it to? It is imperative that you back up all files like this, for this exact reason. Hard drives can die at any moment, and when they do all data is lost for the most part. It may be possible to get off the data, but it involves sending the drive to a data recovery place that has a "clean room" (a large room that is essentially a vacuum where they dissect the drive and attempt to pull all data off) which is extremely expensive to do. You always want to have at least 2 copies of things in 2 different places. Your only real hope with this drive is to attach it to another computer and hope it will recognize it and that there is a problem on your computer you are currently using and not the drive. My suspicion is that it is the drive though, they do this quite a bit. Especially the lower echelon drives such as freecom...

I am so sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you can try attaching it to another computer and hoping it recognizes it, otherwise the data is lost :(.

I am so sorry to hear that :( I wish somehow people were more aware of the necessity of backing up to multiple locations, without having to find out the hard way :(. Definitely try it on another computer and hope for the best, if you haven't done that already.

Freecom Hardrive "Malfunction"

Not necessarily your information (data) was lost. The freecom hard drive might have some problems installing itself or some connection issues. I would take it to a data recovery technician. Of course there is always a 50 50 chance that you lost it or not. Wish you the best, Good luck

External Toshiba 400GB HDD not recognized on my Dell CPx J650GT

New hard drives need to be formatted! So go into the control panel switch to classic view, ( if you are still using category view for the control panel ) open administrative tools, then open computer management. Next open disk management. In disk management your new drive will show as raw, you will be give the option of formatting the drive, select primary partition and format in NTFS.
This will then format the drive, when this has finished your new drive will appear in my computer.

Freecom 400GB Hard drive not recognized.its a Freecom mobile drive xxs 400gb , my pc just cant recgnize the hard drive

I'll assume your using Windows.
I'll assume it's a USB drive.
I'll assume it is an external drive.
And I'll assume it's formatted as NTFS.

Try using the USB (or FireWire) port for anouther drive to see if that is the problem, if it is then reinstall the driver for the port, through the Computer Managment Concole (assuming yur using windows).

If you formatted the drive as FAT, re-format it as NTFS.

My 400gb freecom external hardrive won,t uncompress my files. i have recently reset my laptop back to factory settings. i dont know if this the cause of the prob but all i was ok b4. can you help please?

Have you tried moving the files onto your laptop and uncompressing them there?

Did you have Winrar (or any other copressing software) installed on the laptop before you went back to factory settings? Are the compressed files on the external drive in the .zip or .rar (or another) file format?
