Try reinstalling the software and make sure all the cables are connected correctly. More detailed information about what it is doing and what it is not would be helpful. The drivers may not have loaded from the install disc so try uninstalling and reinstalling the software.

Forgive me for asking this, but roughly speaking about 80 to 85% of problems involving ink or toner are resolved by the following: Are you using a manufacturer’s factory new ink cartridge or toner? I f you are using a refilled (worst possible choice) cartridge , toner or ink, or third party cartridge (2nd. worst possible choice) that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges. They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead. If you are using the manufacturer’s new ink cartridges, then please contact their technical support group.Factory new cartridges usually have warranties on them. Don
Kodak printer are designed in such a way that if you even don't print from them, everytime you on-off the printer the cleaning process goen on, which results in emtying the ink cartridges. Try installing new ink cartridges. if u still get the same ink error. Then the printer will be replaced.
1) Remove the Kodak printer and all its software. 2) Disconnect the USB cable from the computer. 3) Reinstall the entire software applications for the printer just as if you were installing it for the first time. 4) When asked to connect the printer .. Use a different USB port .. even if you have to switch something out .. but do this step irregardless.
Now what I want to know is .. 1) Can you print from the computer? 2) Black still "gone" ?
Here are the things you will be asked to try if you call support. They may fix the problems as well. Taking the printhead out and putting it back in is the big helper.
Remove the black and color ink cartridges. Right above where the black ink cartridge was, in the top left hand corner of the printhead, push up towards the ceiling and you should be able to push a button that releases the printhead. Place the printhead right back into the printer and push straight back on the back wall. You should hear a loud snap. Replace the ink cartridges which should snap as well. Close the printer. After about a minute or so the printer will ask you to do a calibration. Insert a paper and press start. Scan the calibration sheet. After that, in the menu, do a printhead clean. (If this is a 5100, do it in the home center ->? in the top right ->Maintainence ->Clean Printhead.) Do one basic and one deep. Print a demo sheet to see if anything has changed. If the picture looks better, continue to do cleans. In the event that it does not, the printhead will need to be replaced and since the printer is still under warranty, Kodak specialists will try to overnight you a printhead. The whole process is short and free. The number for Kodak AiO Support is 1 800 421 6699.
Ok trust this solution. Go to www.kodak.com/go/5300downloads and try to install the latest firmware. If the firmware does not work, call kodak AiO Tech Support and go through the troubleshooting steps with them. The solution is usually another cartridge or a new printhead. Either way though, the firmware will update the printer so this won't happen after this first fix.
The version of firmware you originally had on the printer when you
changed the ink cartridge was bad. There is a known issue that when you
put in a new ink cartridge when the printer is in the error state
EMPTY. REPLACE COLOR INK CARTRIDGE" the unit writes that value to the
new ink cartridge so you will continue to have that error.
So to fix
your problem Open the access door and Remove the ink cartridges. Then download and install
the new Firmware. Heres the link.
