Sony PlayStation 2 Console
Problem for Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console

Which console is the "cheapest"?

By Pasty - usenet poster

" "
That means which console is manufactured the cheapest, does break
easily , does not survive a 24-hour-game-session or which console has
the most load errors, which CDs /DVDs are the worst, get unreadable
the first?

Old cartridge-based consoles where almost indestructible and the
carts, too , the PS1 had serious heat problems and the first models
could die after playing 20+ hours in a row!

Which of the modern consoles is the cheapest?

are you serious? I have both GC and PS2, so no bias, but Nintendo has by
far the best reputation for quality and problem-free operation. I'm lucky
enough that my PS2 has never given me trouble, but I've heard many horror
stories and people buying new ones and "returning" their broken ones
because sony wouldn't fix them. Plus my brother-in-law's PSX (like many
people's) only worked if it was upside down.

From my experience, the PS2 is easily the worst quality of the three
systems. In early production, it was absolutely horrible. Now it's
merely tolerable. Early Xbox systems were also very buggy, but not
consistently so.

The GameCube has been pretty solid from day one (apart from some early
systems having issues with Metroid Prime). However, even Nintendo's
system isn't rock-solid. Since Xbox quality has been stepped up
slightly, I think it now surpasses the GC's, but only slightly.
Currently, both the Xbox and GC are quite reliable,  but the PS2 still
lags behind.

Disc read errors have been most prevelant on -- and almost exclusive
to -- Sony's machine, which also suffers terribly from overheating
(although recent systems mostly correct that latter flaw). Sony is
well-known for delivering shoddy products (in terms of durability)
even in the general consumer electronics arena, particularly with home
and personal audio; PSX and PS2 problems come as no surprise. The
GameCube tends to suffer only/primarily from lock-ups, which may or
may not be software related, and 3rd-party controller problems -- even
the 1st party controller is not good (compared to Sony and Microsoft's
offerings) at taking heavy abuse, though it holds up well under
regular wear and tear. Most Xbox bugs can be traced back to the
software, although earlier hardware had overheating problems (among
other things).

Hope that helps however it might.

PS2, hands down.

Sony Playstation 2 Defective, Class Action Charges

May 19, 2003
Consumers have been complaining for more than a year that Sony's
Playstation 2 video game machine stops reading DVDs and certain types
of games, often when the unit is just a few months old. Now, a
class-action lawsuit has been filed against Sony, alleging the company
deceived thousands of consumers by marketing PlayStation 2 as a DVD
player and a video-game unit.

"My son bought a Sony Playstation 2 in September. By Christmas, it
stopped working with a Disc Error, cannot read disc," Janet of
Graniteville, SC, complained to ConsumerAffairs.Com.

Despite numerous consumer complaints, the company claims it's an
insolated problem.

"I have spoken to numerous people who have called Sony about this --
mind you, which isn't caused by normal wear and tear or misuse of the
system -- and Sony still refuses to confirm that this is a mistake
within the system," said Andrew of Warren, PA in his report to
ConsumerAffairs.Com.

The suit charges that PlayStation 2 is not a reliable DVD player and
that playing certain DVDs can shut down the unit. Sony denies
deceiving consumers.

Sony is fighting the suit and contends the problem is not caused by
the unit's design or by Sony's manufacturing process. It blames dust
particles, dirt, fingerprints and scratches on the discs for the
problems.

Sony urges consumers with PlayStation 2 problems to contact the
company at (800) 345-7669 or check the PlayStation 2 Support Web site.

i meant in terms of materials used. it is by far the smallest,
lightest, and uses the least materials of all 3.. cheap as in less
expensive materials, not in quality of manufacturing.

for the ps2 yes, but seems the later consoles are much more reliable;
my brother works at bestbuy and the return rated have gone down
noticeably since the first year.

to tell you the truth ive got all the playstation models and not even one of them have not given me anytrouble what so ever, the reason why sony hasnt taken it in is probably because a few people might have tampered with it which means you lose you warranty, in other words no fefunds and no replacements the only way you would be able to get them sorted no is to find a gaming repair shop, in our days no doesnt even cost too much for repairs, sometimes they will do it all for free.

I own my own house, and I couldn't begin to think where we could stick 15
PCs...
Back about 6 years ago, we did this a lot more, and 4-8 PCs was about as
good as we could do

game.

I do not know 15 people that I would want to play a game with, so this is
not a plus for me.  May also be why I have no desire to play any game
online.

I like my PS2 and have never had ANY problems with it other than my Midnight
Club II game froze when I tried to play it online.  Although I do have a
Gamecube and Xbox they are only for console only games, like Resident Evil
Zero and Halo, if the game is for all three consoles then I get it on my
PS2, 2 port limitations and no HD aside, I like my PS2 mainly cause I feel
it has the most balanced controller layout.

My bad, guess X-box is still tops for that then. I've got to admit it would
be pretty cool to play Halo with that may people, though I don't know anyone
with an X-box, let alone four people with an X-box.

PCs are easier to hook up at a LAN party than Xboxes I believe esepecially
if they are laptops then you don't have to worry about carrying tvs across
town.

Believe it or not my writing this on a PC with broadband so I have sampled
the delights of PC gaming.  But it is a solitary experience really, nothing
beats having 15 of your mates in the same room playing the same game.
Although it could be done on a PC I don't believe it to be as practical as
an Xbox.

More correct words from Covak.  Not many of us have 15 friends with good
PC's that are able to bring their computer round to one persons house.
Although some of us do.....

Ohhh, so when you said "Get an Xbox...more friends can play it than
other current consoles" you meant "Get an Xbox, and then 3 more Xboxes, and
make sure you have 4 TVs too."

More people can play Xbox in the same room that any other console.  Halo is
16 players in one room (I know, we played it)  Other consoles cant do this
or no games support it.

I admit it is an expensive way to play, but if your mates have Xbox's then
they will have TV's as well although you will have to by some sort of hub
(we got one in PC world for ??25)

Chip in with your friends and a new world of gaming opens up for you!

hmm.. disk read errors has to be the ps2. was a nightmare at launch,
however they seemed to have gotten that problem solved.

as far as manufacturing materials, gc has to be the clear choice.

but honestly, at this time i think all 3 are pretty solid, and very
reliable.
