Question about Intermatic WH40 - Water Heater Time Switch - NEMA 1 Indoor Steel Case - DPS

1 Answer

The water heater is broken. When I set it to come on at a certain time both needles stop at 6:30 position (not time) and then the water would get hot when it feels like and does not stay hot long enough(maybe for 5 mins maximum). It was not fun when I had to take two cold showers in the morning. I need help Please especially since winter is right around the corner. Thank you CCHAMBERS

Let's make sure that you have these set correctly first. There is a on tripper (normally silver) and a off tripper (normally brass) that will be the only trippers that you will have unless you have the heater coming on twice a day. And then you have the pointer for the cureent time of day. Make sure that your time is set and trippers are set for time on and off. It's sounds like the two trippers right now are beside each other and that is why it is coming on and then right back off. You would need to leave the heater on for at least three or four hours to get it the whole tank hot enough for a couple of people to take showers and not lose hot water,

If two trippers are right next to each other on WH40, the water heater stays on for an hour. The minimum set time for Intermatic WH40, T-100 series, WH21 etc is one hour. I have several of these timers sitting on my office desk.

You need to check if problem is timer or water heater. Use manual override on timer to turn on circuit. Does the manual override click on-and-off crisp?

If manual override does NOT click crisp on-and-off, then timer needs replacement.

If manual override works, and water in heater is still cold, the water heater needs repair or replacement.

One more thing to check. You say the dial stops moving? This indicates that the pins need a bit of grease so they don't catch on the switch lever. It also indicates your clock motor is worn out. Buy 240V clock motor at WW Grainger for $16

I have a Rheemglas Fury model # 81VP207, no hot water it is in a trailer home. HELP

I don't recognize the models number, if your water heater is an electric, check the two-pole circuit breaker in the distribution panel to make certain it has not tripped. If it has, try resetting it. If it will not reset, the heater element is probably bad. If the breaker has not tripped, either the thermostat(s) or heating element(s) are bad.
If it's gas, there are several problems that can cause a heater to not start. First is the pilot lit? If not, try holding the gas control down in the pilot position and light it using a match. (The instructions are on a label on the side of the heater). After the pilot lights, turn to "on" position and it will start to reheat the tank. If the pilot will not relight, either the gas control is failed, or (more likely) the thermocouple has failed. (The thermocouple is a very small copper tube that screws into the gas control and the other end is positioned in the flame of the pilot (it monitors the pilot flame to make certain the pilot is burning and only if satisfied, will allow the gas control to turn on and heat the water in the tank).
Hope this helps.

Water meter keeps running. When I turn off the water supply to the hot water tank the needle on the water meter stops, does that mean that I have a leak in the hot water pipe coming out of tge tank.

Yes you have a leak on hot pipe or TP overflow tube.
Put ear against pipe to listen for sound of running water.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-problems-with-water-heater.html#listen
If TP valve goes into drain line, check if water is running down TP overflow tube.
Check each faucet for leaks.
If pipes are under slab, put ear against each faucet to determine which faucet is closest to broken pipe.

I want to add an under-counter auxiliary water heater to my 15A dishwasher circuit. I need to install some sort of relay to cut out the water heater when the dishwasher is being run, to avoid overloading...

If I understand correctly you have 15 amp breaker with 14gauge wire.
Total watt capacity of 15 amp breaker is recommended at 80% rated load = 12 amps

You want to connect two appliances to same 15 amp line.
1) You have 6 amp Dishwasher that draws 720 Watts
2) You have under the counter water heater with 1500 Watt element that draws 12.5 amps.
3) Combined load is 18.5 Amps and 2220 Watts, approximately
So you do not want dishwasher and water heater turned on at same time.
Makes good sense.

Solutions:
> Easiest thing would be to put water heater on ordinary wall switch located inside sink cabinet.
Back when garbage disposals first came out, garbage disposal switch was inside sink cabinet. You opened cabine door and flipped the switch.
> Next solution would be to put water heater on a timer located under the sink. There are different timers. In-wall timers and box-type

In-wall timer would need relay/contactor
A battery operated timer like the ST01C would not need to be reset after power outage
http://waterheatertimer.org/Programmable.html
Here are instruction pages for selecting and installing the relay/contactor.

Add a comment any time.

Box-type timer like T101 120Volt timer. This timer needs no relay/contactor.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-T104-Intermatic-timer.html#T101
Timer needs to be reset after power outage, but operates on ordinary 120V power, and is simple to install.

> There is no easy way to wire the dishwasher and water heater together so one is certain not to operate when other is turned on. There are likely electronic control panels for that project. But since you know the hours when dishwasher is likely to be ON, then set water heater timer to turn OFF during those hours. Water inside tank will stay hot for a couple hours, so there is no loss.

It sounds like you are a solid electrician.
If needed, add comment any time for more assistance.

Check for faulty (broken/apart inside) and replace check valve on hot side of tank (top line) between line connection and tank. Stem, spring etc, of new one goes in facing into tank.

Overflow pipe flowing

Check temperature off the water for proper functioning thermostat. Look at set points on heater's thermostat. It's made to let water out when water get's to a certain high temp. More than likely it will be the pressure relief valve going bad and not holding.

T&P releif valve can be replaced on heater. Turn water off and remove with a pipe wrench. It will come out and any hardware store will carry it. T & P pressure relief valve is 3/4 threads.

When installing new one use teflon tape on threads.

The elbow is broken and the air from the hot water tank is leaked

Any exhaust air coming from the gas water heater is potentionally life threating. I would get it fixed. Do you have a CO2 meter close by the water heater? If it is leaking air back into the house that has CO2, after a certain amount the alarm will go off. If you dont have one get one. A must have with gas appliances.

I turn oof my hot water to do some fix at the shower, and now i dont have hot water, i know the problem is in the heater, but what?

Are you sure the pilot is still lit or that it stayed lit if you tried to relight it?

If the pilot is on check to be certain no one turned the temp setting way down.

Finally, check the cold water valve at the inlet to the tank. Is it open? Does the knob spin very freely possibly indicating the valve stem is broken?

If you check those things and nothing cures it, please reply to this with a description of what you find.
