  • When you go to the Connect to Server dialog, you may browse the names of computers that are on your local subnet.
  • You can connect to a server via its IP address or DNS name. If it is required or more convenient in your environment, you may also use other valid URL formats, such as:

  • The name of the "share" (the shared disk, volume, or directory) must be specified. You will not be prompted for it.
  • You cannot type spaces as part of the share name when connecting. In place of any space in the share name, type: %20 .
  • When troubleshooting a connection issue, you can ping the IP address of the Windows PC using the Mac OS X Network Utility application (in the Utilities folder). A successful ping verifies a TCP/IP connection between the two computers. This is an important first troubleshooting step when there's no response or a timeout for a connection attempt, since SMB connections involving a Mac require TCP/IP. However, a successful ping does not mean the SMB service is also working or available.
  • Check Microsoft support resources for information about setting up file sharing on your Microsoft Windows-based computer. These may include Help files installed on your PC or the Microsoft online Knowledge Base.   • When troubleshooting an SMB connection issue, use Console, which is located in the Utilities folder. These Console logs may help advanced users identify an issue: private/var/log/samba, private/var/log/kernel.log, system.log . Note that some log files only appear when logged into Mac OS X with an administrator acccount.
  • If you are connecting to Windows XP, make sure that the Internet Connection Firewall settings are not interfering with your connection. SMB uses ports 137, 138, 139, and 445. These ports should be open on the Windows XP computer. This may require "Advanced" configuration of the XP firewall.
  • If you are connecting to a Windows SMB resource, check to see if the firewall is blocking TCP ports 137, 138, 139 and 445. After trying the above steps, you may perform advanced troubleshooting by inspecting log entries in the Event Log of the Windows SMB resource (if you have access to it), and/or the Mac OS X computer's relevant logs in the Console application. If those steps do not help identify the issue, or you do not want to perform advanced troubleshooting, than you should contact your network administrator. It may be necessary to contact your network administrator in some situations in order to grant access to your Mac from the SMB resource, or its host network configuration.
  • Mac OS X uses SMB only over the TCP/IP protocol, not the NetBEUI protocol.

Will not function with Windows 7, what is wrong?


Not all programs that worked in Windows XP will run in Windows Vista or Windows 7.
I suggest you try compatibility mode to see if it helps.

If the program is not compatible, then you may try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

Use the following steps:

1) Right click on the Program

2) Click on Properties

3) Click on Compatibility tab

4) Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully.

If the compatibility is not successful, then try and runthe Program Compatibility troubleshooter:


1. Open the Program Compatibility troubleshooter by clicking theStart button.

Then click Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then clickTroubleshooting. Under Programs, clickRun programs made for previous versions of Windows.

2. Follow the instructions in the troubleshooter.

If you cannot install a program, insert the installation disc for the program and, using the troubleshooter, browse to the program's setup file, usually called Setup.exe, Install.exe, or something similar. The troubleshooter is not designed to work on programs that have an .msi file name extension.


If you run Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and execute your software in Windows XP.


If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player (www.vmware.com) and install a separate copy of Windows XP (either Home Edition or Professional) for that purpose.You can find virtualization software free of charge that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

I'm trying to run my Hypertech ECON programmer for my 2010 Silverado, when I install the disk it gives me a error code 2869 and exits me out of the install. Am running WIndows 7


It seems that Windows 7 is not compatible with this program and thus the error 2869.
1.run the program in the Program Compatibility Assistant utility in Windows 7.
then select the caption that says it ran on a previous Operating system ( that is Windows XP/ Vista etc. and select the radio dial to the left and click apply.
Instruction from Windows help:

No audio sound in my pc how to get back sound ?

Welcome.

Check if the sound driver is installed and up to date, follow these steps to find that.

Step 1:
  1. Click Start and then click Run.
  2. Type devmgmt.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Check for Audio and if you see any yellow exclamation next to sound then either audio drivers are not installed or it needs to be updated.
Step 2:

To check manufacture try this.
  1. Click Start and then click Run.
  2. Type dxdiag in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Sound tab.
  4. Under Device, look for Name, and under Driver, look for Provider.
  5. Click Exit.
Contact the manufacturer of the sound driver to request an updated sound driver.

If you dont see any problem with device manager (Step 1)
try below steps

  • Something you have running in the background is failing. Googling around shows one person who had installed Style XP and that was causing the problem. Other links show people having the problem but no solution. So if you haven't installed Style XP, you'll need to do some systematic troubleshooting.

    The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

    The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

    If the computer is completely virus/malware-free, manage your startup to find the culprit.

    Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

    This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Determine whether you can hear sound. If you can hear sound, there is a problem with the original output device and the issue is resolved. If you cannot hear sound, plug the original output device back into the computer and go to method 2.

Troubleshooting wireless home network using windows xp


To Configure a Wireless Connection in Windows XP, Follow the Instructions Outlined Below.
  1. Click the Start button, click Network Connections, and choose Show all Connctions.

  2. Click the Wireless Network Connection icon with your right mouse button, then choose View Available Wireless Networks.

  3. Choose the name of the 2Wire access point from the Available networks list.
  4. In the Network key field, type the hexadecimal key to access the wireless network.
    Note: The hexadecimal key and wireless network name should already be set up on the 2Wire device. Use the key that you set up on the 2Wire device.
  5. In the Confirm network key field, type the hexadecimal key to access the wireless network again for confirmation.
  6. Click the Connect button.
