Question about Samsung HLN5065W 50" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

Thin horizontal black lines

A few days ago when I turned my tv on in the morning, the picture quality had noticably reduced, and there are now thin black lines spaced about 3" apart running horizontally accross the screen. Also, the approximate 4" space on either side of the screen (occupying the difference between 16:9 and 4:3) is of exceptional poor quality. The problem is the same whether I'm watching hd cable tv or an hd dvd, so I'm assuming the problem is with the tv rather than cable box or dvd. I'm getting no errors or warnings from the tv.

    I've searched online for a service manual, but haven't had any luck finding it. I've done the '1-8-2-Power' scenario, but don't know what to do from there....

If it is tv a convergence problem, you should perform the convergence setting procedure illustrated in service manual, if this does not work the convergence board is faulty. To test if it is tv you can use a conventional aerial or a different box

If it is not tv then it can be a cable problem, or a faulty receiver box

It looks like either failing convergence IC chips or a couple busted capacitors around them. This will need to be given for servicing.
You could try a hard reset first though: Unplug the TV from the power socket, remove all cabling, wait 5 minutes and replug to wall socket and redo cabling.

However, I think that you could have either convergence problems or a failing power board, for which you will need to get the set serviced.

    Ok..here's how to reset your Samsung DLP TV’s lamp hour meter or hour counter. Resetting the counter is a very simple procedure.


    1. Begin with the TV powered off.

    2. Point your remote towards your TV.

    3. Press:

    4. Mute + 1 + 8 + 2 + Power.

    5. Your TV set should now say “Loading Factory”.

    6. Browse down to “Option” then press Enter (or the right cursor button).






    NOTE: The Mute+1+8+2 buttons needs to be pressed down consecutively
    and fairly quickly. If your TV does not enter the service menu after
    using this combination, you can subsitute MENU instead of MUTE. This
    seems to work for some sets. Also, the right cursor arrow also acts as
    the ENTER button, so try it if you’re having difficulty with the ENTER
    button.

    To exit the service menu, hit press the EXIT button or just turn off
    your TV (remember not to turn on your TV immediately afterwards!).


    However, i dont think that will resolve the issue. If you heard a kind of intermittent sound coming from the TV, it could be an indicator that the color wheel needs replacement as well. this could be another cause for the issue.

    All in all, I think it would be in your best interest to call in a service guys, as this is an internal problem, which will entail opening up the TV..

When I switch my tv to the HDMI input it appears to be normal for a few seconds but the screen stays black and I get a thin pink line running horizontally across the bottom right corner of the screen then...


You did not mention what you are connecting with HDMI but I have had problems with my PS3 and it is copy protection related. On a PS3, you have to connect it to HDMI1 otherwise some BlurRay movies will not play.
You might have a bad HDMI cable. I have heard the quality of cable does not matter these days but I still have had issues with the really cheap cables. I still do not buy the really expensive HDMI cables though.

It is my guess that you have some intermitent solder connections in the Vertical output circuit.

Picture is now a thin horizontal line


now only visible in a thin horizontal line. first of all you reduce brightness to monimum. it just to protect your tv from crt demage. your problem is in horizontal output section as you have mentioned that week or so ago the right and left bottom edges of the picture began to move in like a sideways triangle filled with black so this sympton is due to hor. section problem. your flyback transformer or horizontal output might be defective. but remember check for power supply is ok from surge protector hope this will help.

Too late now but I hope you had it serviced while it was still on parts warranty. With a couple of exceptions, service on those is by major pcb replacement.
