Shredded shiny paper

Hello,

The tan and black paper that is coming out of your printer is the Teflon fuser sleeve that has torn and coming apart. The fuser is the part of the printer that melts the toner onto the paper. The Teflon sleeve in the fuser is where the heat comes from. When the sleeve gets worn down it can tear and you get the little pieces coming out like you have. You will need to replace the fuser unit in the printer to correct this issue. The fusers are available from Amazon and other web sites and they are user installable. The part number is RG5-2657 or RG5-2661 either parts number will work in your unit.

Vertical line on paper from top to bottom

In my experience if you refill the toner cartridge with the toners available in the market, though they are labelled"for Brother 2140" you get vertical dark patches on the paper. Once in a while you get good quality print too. Replacement with correct toner cartridge seems to the solution.

My Toshiba 1360 is jamming every other sheet at the exit from the heated roller. It seems that the paper is curving down slightly and catching on the ribs before the paper exit sensor switch. The switch...

At the exit of the printer, there is the fuser unit (heating roller, which heats the paper to fuse the toner on to the paper. The fuser (heater) is covered with the Teflon sheet Sleeve. So that the paper is never directly in contact with the heater and heat is transferred through Teflon sleeve.
I have noticed Paper Jam at the outer paper bin in case of damaged Teflon sleeve. A very clear indication of broken Teflon is that there is a loud cracking noise, when the printer initializes (printer power on) or while printing a page. Secondly, the toner fails to fuse properly to the paper and gets erased when rubbed. You may use a torch to inspect it as well. Secondly, inspect the paper path for any obstructions. There may be a torn piece of paper. Inspect the gears and roller from the input tray to the paper exit point and look for any stuck roller.
So, it is recommended that make sure that the Teflon Sleeve is OK and there is no obstruction in the paper exit path.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

I'm trying to install a new toner cartridge into my printer (yes, it's a Samsung cartridge, not an imitation) and the printer won't recognize the cartridge - it keeps giving me an error message saying,...

most toners have a wing or *** or? that contacts a sensor in some way when the lid closes to tell the machine a toner is present. ive had these pieces broken off on new toner or the toner sensor may be disloged from its seat. check around the perimiter of the lid to find the sensor then see if anything is present to trip the sensor. if its broken off stick a q-tip in the sensor that will get you printing til you can replace the part

Low toner message

sounds like you have a bent toner sensor. turn the machine off and take the toner out and place on the side

what you could try to do is grab a piece of paper fold it in 4 like so
__ __
|__|__| __
|__|__| then rip one piece like so |__|

then rip one piece off and fold that 5 times over it self.

look into where the toner goes in the middle you will see a silver bracket with a black round piece of plastic on the top left conner you need to put that piece of paper under that coner where the black circle is and turn the machine back on then put the toner in.

if this does not work you need a tech to look at it

Toner Error - reinstall drum unit

Hi, This worked for us:

The message "Toner Error" is usually caused by the drum and/or toner
cartridge not being installed properly or if the machine does not
recognize the toner. To clear this message, follow the steps listed
below:

1. Verify you are using Genuine Brother Cartridges. Brother strongly
recommends that you do not refill the toner cartridges provided with
your machine. We also strongly recommend that you continue to use only
Genuine Brother Brand replacement toner cartridges. Use or attempted use
of potentially incompatible tone cartridges in the Brother machine may cause damage to the machine and/or may result in
unsatisfactory print quality. Our warranty coverage does not apply to
any problem that is caused by the use of unauthorized third party toner
and/or cartridges. To protect your investment and obtain premium
performance from the Brother machine, we strongly recommend the use of
Genuine Brother Supplies.

2. Make sure that you are using the correct drum and toner cartridge(s)
for your machine. The part numbers for your model are as follows:
NOTE: Some cartridges can look EXACTLY the same among different models
and will fit the machine even if they are not designed for use in that
model. Verify the part number before using the cartridge(s).

TN550: Toner cartridge (standard)
TN580: Toner cartridge (high yield)
DR520 = Drum unitt.

3. Make sure that the cartridge is not damaged. Remove the toner
cartridge by following the steps listed below:

a. Press the cover release button and then open the front cover.

b. Remove the old drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. Place it on a
drop cloth or disposable paper to avoid scattering toner.
NOTE: Be careful not to spill the toner. If toner gets on your
clothes or hands, wipe or wash it off immediately with cold water.

c. Hold down the blue lock lever on the right and pull the toner
cartridge out of the drum unit.

d. Look at the toner cartridge and see if any parts or pieces appear to
be broken or missing, if so, the cartridge may be defective and should
be replaced.

4. If the toner cartridge is not damaged, reinstall it into the drum
unit. If it was damaged, use a new toner cartridge and reinstall it into
the drum unit.

5. Reset the drum/toner unit into the machine.

6. Close the front cover.

7. If the message "Toner Error' continues to appear on the display
unplug the machine from the wall outlet.

8. Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

9. Look inside where the drum was. On the left side wall, look for a
small, black plastic lever/actuator. A flashlight may help see it.

10. Using the palm of your hand, slide it along the left wall in and
out a few times as this may free up the actuator/lever in case it is
stuck. The actuator/lever is spring loaded and needs to move back and
spring forward to operate correctly.

If the lever does not move, spring back or is missing and your machine
is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center
(ASC) in your area or contact Brother Customer Service by calling
1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding
holidays. If the machine is out of warranty, you can locate a Brother
Authorized Service Center using the information listed above.

If the lever moves freely and springs back to its original position
continue to Step 11.

11. Reinstall the drum and toner assembly, close the front cover and
plug the machine in.

Check paper tray - reload paper

Your paper sensor actuator arm is most likely broken or out of position, or you may have a dirty sensor if you are in a dusty environment. If you look in the machine with the tray out, you should see a small (usually black) piece of plastic hanging down. You can also take the toner and drum cartridge out and turn it on its back to get a better look. If it's not there, it's probably broken off.

2 IN. GRAY AREA DOWN SIDE PAPER

There are several things that can cause this. A worn toner cartridge and/or transfer roller can cause vertical smears, but it may also be a worn fuser assembly. The teflon coating on the fixing (heat) roller wears off, and leaves vertical streaks of varying widths on the pages. Sometimes you may see "ghost" images on the pages for the same reason. Open the back door of the printer, and hold down the exit guide on the fuser (carefull, it may be very hot). There are two long rollers, the lower one is black, the upper roller is either grey or shiny brown. That's the teflon coating. See if it's peeled or damaged. If so, replace the fuser assembly.
