Hi - Ross - Yes there is. Are you running a desktop? Do you have a good friend that is using a desktop? You can take out your daughter's hard drive and place it another machine and then burn some dvds with the info and pictures. You wouldn't swap it out with the hard in the other machine, you'd add it as an extra drive. If you think this is a possibility and need help as far as the exact steps let me know and I'd be happy to help. You wouldn't damage the other pc. You'd just add the hard drive, burn the dvds and remove it. There's also external cases, just like the ones used for external cd/dvd writers that you can purchase empty and put the hard drive in and then just hook up to your pc and then just pull the info off. But then it would just be sitting there if she gets another computer. I'd go with the first way if possible. Then once you got the info you could reformat the drive and add to a new pc if she gets one so she'd have two drives. Stay away from eMachines. They use "inexpensive" parts if you know what I mean. If the power supply goes out on those things it take the motherboard with it. If you need help with anything just holler. Thanks.

I would take a look at the motherboard, mainly the capacitors and see if any of them are bulging or have stuff coming out of them, if they do the motherboard is pretty much bad. If the motherboard looks good, try disconnecting the cd/dvd rom drive, and remove any add in cards that are in the pc. If there is still an issue, could be a bad cable for the hard drive, or the motherboard or processor could be going bad.

I have an 830GM and am suspicious of a hard drive crash or a motherboard failure and was wondering how to diagnose?

try replacing or swapping the hard drive with another machine and see if it happens again and on which machine if both machine's crash both MB and HD could be bad, If your machine with different HD works fine then it most likely was the HD If not then the MB might be at fault

HARD DRIVE DIED, NEW HARD DRIVE PUT IN AND NOW

This can be a problem if you have shortcuts or programs that point to the location of a file on the "C" drive.

If you want the hard drive to recognize as the Assigned "C" drive. then you need to completely disconnect the rest of the drives including USB and let the motherboard recgnixe the hard drive ONLY first

But you can leave it alone and just work with it. May never give you any problem if you are not an experienced user.

Sounds like the Hard Drive has gone on you. With the proper memory retrieving software one can take the HD out and get everything off of it. I would say your power supply has burned out but you said the fan runs so if it were your Power Supply then the fan would not run. I would either get on a friend's computer and search for tools or software that will allow you to retrieve your memory or a local repair shop should have all that is needed to get your HD's info.

Motherboard died today, how to get my pictures off hard drive?

Yes it will do just as you have said. get yourself the correct enclosure IDE or SATA and connect it up to another PC you can then transfer to your hearts content. one word though I would connect AFTER you pc has booted to ensure it does not conflict with your regular drive (has been known and it will just sit there until you diconnect the extra drive)
It may not do that but why bother with the hassle.

You can then use windows search to find all the pictures, music, documents etc.

Once youhave what you want ftom it you could format it and use it as an external dive like you say

Sony Vaio desktop will not load windows

what your describing is a hard disk failure the computer cant or wont read the hard disk to boot the machine, so it shuts down. Sounds like the hard disk died from a bad virus. and the computer wont run. Best I can do for you is either format the Hard disk and reinstall the operating system or buy a new hard disk. Cheers

My dell 6400i won't boot

Yes I read it and I've seen it. When you connect your hard drive back into the controller socket on the motherboard there is a pin 1, that must match up with pin 1 on the slot. The pin is normally a different color..if you don't put it back with matching pin 1's then it will not work, it'll act dead. So double check your plug in from the hard drive back to the motherboard. If you have any questions let me know..please rate this solution.

My d drive is full

Hello caliandrew88,
Having a full D Drive will not cause Vista to crash. If you need to free up space then get an external hard drive to move files off of your machine.

You can place your hard drive into an External Hard Drive Case and transfer your files on another system (this would be cheaper than having a repair shop do a ‘data-transfer’).
