A lot of these units have 2 year warranty. Minn Kota web site list authorized warranty repair centers. The foot control unit most likely got water in the digital switch. If not under warranty any longer, open it up and see if any water bubbles in the sealed board where speed switch makes contact. If so you will need new foot control.

Jazzy goes fast in forward slow in reverse

It is supposed to. Forward you can see where you are going and normal steering applies. In reverse, you can't really see where you are going and it is only for backing up. Also reverse steering applies, so you turn left to go right, which is confusing for old folks, especially at speed. In Forward, the throttle should be responsive, slow to fast.

It may have a shorted capstan motor control transistor or it might be set in high speed duplicator mode. I need the model number to say more.

Need the model #. During the mean time(back in the buggy farm) trace the wiring & check the control switch operation including the connections. Trial & error-swap the polarity on the main power feed to motor control & check ops. Motor runs forward, motor OK.

I have a Teac A-6300 that won't go fast forward or reverse but the capstan motor is running

The Capstan motor is just for the play speed regulation so it has nothing to do with the reel motors. You can have an open safety microswitch or maybe a bad relay. It is really hard to say without looking at the unit but I am sure it is repairable. Is the right dummy plug put in the back? This can stop all transport functions if it is out.

How do you program into the dvd that you want it to fast forward quickly? There is a way but am not sure how it is done.

You don't, you just press the FORWARD button on remote during DVD playback to 'fast forward' (pressing this button a second time during playback increases forward scan speed). The forward and reverse buttons have 'SLOW/SEARCH' printed above them on the remote. The other buttons next to them are the PREV/NEXT buttons (SKIP/INDEX).

DVD playback speed/skip/search is mostly a manual user function; it cannot be auto set.

Motor speed needs to be regulated by PWM. Reducing the current (with a resistor) actually lowers the torque - which, with a given load, does result in reduced speed - however, different length tapes (60min vs 90min), as well as different quality, and even current position in the tape, will change the load and hence the speed. You need to regulate the speed via PWM. It's sometimes done on a small board built into the motor, in which case you'd have a round hole into which you could insert an INSULATED screwdriver (tiny flathead wrapped most of the way in electrical tape works). It may be done on the main board, in which case you could find a pot conveniently labeled "motor speed", or perhaps "pulse width" or "pwm" or something to that effect. Find it, mark its current position just in case, and turn it to see if it gets the effect you're after. And there are some tape decks in the world with no speed adjust - they are designed with a specific speed motor and the sizes of the wheels and gears are calculated for that speed. Also there may be a mechanical fault/malfunction causing the speed problem. An initial check and thorough cleaning of the capstan and pinch roller should be done. If there is a buildup of tape oxide or a piece of a broken tape wrapped around the capstan, the tape travel will be too fast (do to the effective increase in capstan shaft diameter). If the pinch roller isn't fully engaging, the tape can be getting pulled onto the takeup spool at a speed faster than the capstan control. A different source of trouble might be a slip clutch (possibly an idler/clutch assembly)which is binding, or otherwise not functioning the way it should. Another type of motor doesn't have it's speed controlled by an internal or external voltage.. instead, the motor has an internal centrifugal speed controller. This type of motor can be found on older tape decks, and might not have been utilized more recently. Good luck
