Question about Amana Dryers

1 Answer

I have an Amana Distinctions Clothes dryer that has stopped heating all together. How can I tell if its the actual element that has gone bad, or the thermostat telling the element to turn on? Any help is much appreciated

ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANY WORK ON IT.
Check to make sure you are getting full 220 Volt power to the dryer, if you are then:
Sounds like your problem may be with the heating coil. Remove the back/or front just under the door of the machine and try to locate the air duct going from the blower to the drum. Normally inside/outside the air duct you will find the heating coil and the thermostats/thermistors. Once you have located the heating coil, remove the two wires from it and check the coil with an ohm meter across the two terminals of the coil.
You should read continuity across the terminals, if not you will need to replace the coil as it is faulty.
If the heating coil is ok, then:
You can check the thermostat/thermistor one at a time by removing the two wires and taping them together with electrical tape or with an ohm meter to test the thermostat/thermistor. (Should have/show continuity)
If the coil heats up then replace the thermostat/thermistor.
(Thermal fuse.If it overheats the dryer will not operate. It's located on the blower housing. It cannot be reset. A vent clogged with lint can cause it to overheat. You can test it with an Ohm meter or continuity checker, if no continuity, replace it)
DO NOT LEAVE THE WIRES TAPED TOGETHER AFTER THE TEST.
This could cause a FIRE, as you have removed the safety of overheat from the machine.

There is no heat when it turns clothes

Heating element has gone bad. Just happened to my front loading Amana. Not too difficult to change out if you are handy. Just need to get the part number from your manual or website.

My electric amana dryer heats up but does not seem to blow the heat around and the lint is only gathering at the bottom of the lint trap, so it takes forever to dry my clothes. What do I need to do?

This caused by one of two possible things. Either you have poor air flow, or a clogged vent preventing air from flowing freely and therefor making the dryer short cycle, which in turn will take you two or three times to dry yor clothes, or the heating element has gone bad, burnt in half and is making contact with the case to provide it just enough power to barely heat. The second thing is a very rare occurance. I would turn the dryer on, find out where the air vents out to, and with the dryer running, go to where it vents and check to see if there is a strong flow of air. 9 times out of 10 that is going to be your problem. Another way to check air flow is to just pull the vent off the back and let the dryer run and see if your clothes dry faster. If you do it that way and they still take a long time to dry, then you'll probably need to replace the heating element

The dryer works but there is no hot air. How can I tell if it is the heating unit or the heating sensor that is bad? Amana NDE7800AY

Ohm the heating element for continuity
There is a thermal cutoff at the top of the element case with 2 wires
Hook these two wires together for a check or ohm it for continuity. . The dryer should run. unless it is a more tech problem. Also check for 230 volt at the wall and at the service cord at the dryer. A dryer will run on 115 but it will not heat.

It is not heating up

There could be a couple of problems. First, ensure the vent line is clear. If it is stopped up, this will cause the dryer to go out on overtemp and will not dry your clothes. Second, the overtemp sensor could be bad and not letting your heater element to energize. And third, your heating element could be shot. I have attached a link to Amana's owner manual for your dryer.

tif it is most likley the element has gone bad they usually cost about 45 dollars and if you can find a friend to help you replace it its not that hard best bet is to call a used appliance store they usually have them new and in stock do not try going to the manufacture they will charge you double for the same exact part

Super capacity Amana dryer is less than 3 years old. It no longer dries the clothes. There is no heat.

check your heating element in the back of the unit for breaks, if there is not heat that is your problem. the other issue can be a fuse that blew not letting power get to the heating element but the easiest and cheapest thing to look at first is the heating element

Dryer leaking water

it sounds to me like the heating element that heats up to dry the clothes has gone faulty or tripped out. Cant really tell from here.. when you open the drier is there a good level of heat ? If not, its the heating element section at fault.
