Question about Olympus FE-280 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Upon hitting the 'power' button, the camera makes a low beeping noise, the lens on my Olympus FE-280 goes in and out, and then stays extended. The camera can then only take a poorly focused shot. The Wide/Telephoto button does not work.

Your camera almost certainly has a lens error. This is such a common fault that I hope you don't mind me pasting my stock generic answer below. No point in reinventing the wheel!

Stuck lenses are probably the most common reason that compact digital cameras get thrown away, but there's a fair chance of recovering use of your camera again

The fault is commonly caused by dirt or grit blocking the mechanism, or due to it having suffered a recent fall. Another common cause is that the camera was in a pocket or bag and the power button accidentally activated and tried to open the lens against resistance. The mechanism may have simply become dislodged or there may be parts which have broken.

If your camera is still under warranty and has definitely not been subject to misuse then contact the Olympus service department in your country to find out about a free repair. If the warranty has expired though a professional repair will far exceed the cost of replacing your camera. You will therefore have nothing to lose by trying to fix this yourself.

Please click here and you will be taken to an excellent article provided by the Camera Repair website. For the most part, you'll be guided on how to physically manipulate your camera to try and clear the fault.

If the link doesn't work then cut and paste the following address into your browser:-

Good luck, I hope you manage to use this information to fix your camera. Please take a moment to rate the free answer I have provided for you.

My olympus FE-280 will not turn on. I put in a fully charged battery and when I press the power button the light on the back blinks red and the lens opens and closes about four times before completely...

There are many sides to the fault but it seems that you have a serious one. The camera needs to be opend to confirm the fault and so it needs experienced hands. The possible fault could be failure of the electronics, maybe the shuter drive, the lens drive or maybe the flash section. Assuming that your battery is good the fault can be related to a shorting or power related malfunctioning. Disconnection of one of the sectionmay be needed to confirm but an access to the camera electronics is a very sensitive job . so take help and hope the fault is economical. Good day

Olympus FE 230 Problem

I had the same problem. I hit it a long time ago when it did it for the first time. It has been a year since then and it is doing it again. I tried the book solution again and it will not work. I tried holding the lens, no luck, and I tried applying pressure when the lens went back in, again, no luck. Honestly, I don't think I will buy another Olympus fe series camera again. The solutions provided do help the first few times your camera does it, but you might want to start checking the market for a new camera.

Olympous Master Camera Problems

If the lens stays out then it would appear to be the fault lays there.
Check with Olympus support or in the camera is still under warranty retun it to the seller.
There is no self repair option.

Fe-280

I have recently had the same problem. I sent my camera back to Olympus who very efficiently repaired it FOC and sent it back with an extended warranty. I gather this is a very common problem with this camera.
