Question about Amana ABB1927DE Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

2 Answers

Refrigerator and freezer are not cold. This is the second time this has happened. We purchased the appliance about 6 years ago. I have unplugged it and let it set for an hour. Plugged it back in. . . . nothing. Is there a re-set button? What should I do?

I am sure by now that things are already pretty warm. There are a few possibilities here that can cause your symptom
1. The defrost cycle never terminated. This is controlled by the 60 deg F thermostat in the evaporator area. If the thermostat has failed it will not allow the defrot cycle to terminate when 60 deg F has been reaches. I.e the unit will sit there dead but the interior lights will work.
It is item 31 of this link but not shown on the diagram:

Here is the thermostat:

2. Also there is a Thermistor (Item 29 of the below link) than can cause the unit not to start:

3. The unit control board has failed
Unit control: (Item 5)

There are other things that can cause this such as the Compressor PTC Relay / Thermal Overload or the run capacitor. But the items listed above are the most common.
PTC / Thermal overload Items 10 and 11 of this link:

If there are no internal lights then there can be a problem with power after the power cord.

I am sorry but there really is not a fast fix for this. What you can do is place a fan blowing into the freezer compartment for 2 hours. (Makes a water mess) If the defrost cycle terminates when you plug it in after the manual defrost then the defrost heater can be defective. The heater is Item 15 of this link:

With out troubleshooing with a meter using the wiring diagram here

It would be difficult to say exactly what is causing your current failure. All I can say is what will cause it. I can not say change part "____" because I have not proved with out a doubt what part has failed.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Try going further than defrost and draining the hose. There is gunk that builds up and you need to clean that out. Use a pipe cleaner(the fuzzy wires used mostly for art projects. They actually can clean pipes and water lines!!) Also, you can pick up a pack of pellets used for breaking down the "gunk" build up.

Freezer frosting over vents, refrigerator not cold enough

i work on this for a living 33 years..sight unseen, I'd say the evaporator is froze over. Its missed its defrost..I suggest leave freezer door open and unplug for 24 hours to melt ice..There still will be a problem and this will continue, but this gives you temporary service. You;ll need a repair-person to fix it. The evaporator frrezes over blocking airflow to fresh -food section. This in turn can cause a fresh food and freezer failure..

You have one of two problems going on. Your fan is spinning at hitting the sides. Or your compressor is shot which seems to be more the problem and even though it is cold the humming sound is a warning for you that the compressor is shot and it is more affordable to replace the fridge then the compressor. Sometimes compressor can cost more then the fridge.

Freezer/Refrigerator tempurature swinging wildly

The compressor is overheating and not starting. Could be just the start relay. If this happens again try unplugging it for about an hour then it should work for a while. Heat between doors is normal this is an electric heater designed to keep the doors from sweating. You just noticed it because the refrigerator wasn't cold.
