Either air is leaking out somewhere (safety valve?) or the valving in the compressor needs attention. Check the drive belt to see if it is slipping. Hope this helps!

Check your regulator to make sure its set to maximum. When was the last time you drained the tank, it may be full of water.

My sears air compressor model 919.156781 will not pump up past 40 psi , then motor then compressor stalls and motor gets hot , have to unplug . I have had the motor checked

When it gets to 40 psi turn it off and see if you hear air leaking down from somewhere....if so listen and feel around the edges of the compressor head. If you hear or feel air leaking there you may need to replace a head gasket.

If in the past your system can build-up pressure up to 40 psi even if the supply valve is open and water is being used in your house, then your pump impeller maybe already worn out that's why its pumping capacity was reduced.

125 psi sears air compressor only goes up to 40psi and will not stop running I've replaced pressure switch and manifold.

Hi,
If the unit will only pump to 40 psi. then here are a few things I would check...

Check the air filter to make sure it is clean so air can be pulled in easily...
Check the relief valve to make sure that it has not gone bad and is releasing the air pressure or leaking at 40 psi...
Make sure the any hoses or nozzles are tight and not leaking...

If all of this checks out then the compressor has an internal problem such as bad rings or valves that will keep it from pumping to a higher pressure...
The pump will need to be torn apart to find the exact cause of the problem... and many times the correct replacement parts will not be available to rebuild those compressors..

The compressor reaches 40 psi and won't build pressure past 40 psi it just keeps running. checked for leaks and could not find anything the reeds are working fine.

Hi, my name is John. Welcome to FixYa. There has got to be a leak, check the line coming from the pump to the tank, you may have to remove it to check. I find this is often over looked. Thanks for choosing FixYa...John

It says its good for airbrushing, but i cant figure out how to keep air pressure from going past 40, it goes to 100

you need to adjust the air regulator it has a black knob and there should be a pressure gauge on the regulator just pull up on the knob and then turn it counter clockwise and watch the gauge

COMPRESSOR PUMPS UP TO 40-50 psi KEEPS RUNNING.

Most likely the pump is leaking somewhere, if the new hose is not leaking. Hoses don't just burst without showing signs or wear and tear, i.e. cracking and splitting. The pump was probably having problems, and this caused the hose to burst. Look for signs of leakage, and if you can't find them, the pump is shot.

Will only charge to 40 psi, is supposed to charge to 150

You may have a problem still related to the original reason it was reconditioned.

However, you should have a regulator that you set to the tank pressure you want to maintain. Most have a tool regulator as well and 40 psi sounds like that is what it is set for.

If you do have a tank pressure regulator and it is still not charging above 40 psi, then either take it back or pick up a new regulator for under $20 at Home Depot and replace the gauge you have now.

Also, sometimes the gauge will have a needle tilted so that one end presses against the glass, and if you tap the glass hard with your finger it will move on around to the correct pressure.

Finally, if you are not experienced with small compressors, look under your gauge and see if there is not a black knob that pulls out and pushes in to turn and change the pressure.

Air Compressor, low pressure

does the compressor keep running all the time but never gets above 40 or does it turn off at 40?
if it is turning off at 40 I would try using another gauge just to be sure it is 40psi, and if that is the case then you probably have a faulty pressure switch, if the compressor is constantly runnign but won't get past the 40psi then you may have a worn out compressor, check the oil for either a low level or if the oil is dirty, if it is you may just need to drain and refill but if that doesn't fix the issue then you will need to rebuild the compressor
