How back up your files (data) before doing system restore

<p>1. Use of pre-installed backup tools. Many computers have a backup software installed when you buy (including Time Machine backup and restore for Mac or Windows). These tools are designed to transfer files to various media they create on the computer hard drive or external hard drive, you can prevent a total loss of data is performed. When you open the utility, follow the onscreen instructions to complete the backup. <br /> <p><br /> <p>2. Back up important files on a USB stick or Memory Stick. Insert the stick into a USB port on your computer. Drag the selected files to the disk icon on the desktop (Mac) or PC (Windows) will appear. Flash drives and memory sticks are very mobile and can be stored in small spaces such as basements. Although they generally do not have a capacity of more than a few gigabytes (GB), they are large enough to store your important files. <br /> <p><br /> <p>3. Enter an external hard drive. These external hard drives usually have a very large capacity and can therefore keep most or all files on a disk. Connect the external hard drive via a USB port. You can drag and drop files on your hard disk or use it as a means of backup using a backup utility installed. <br /> <p><br /> <p>4. Burn your important files on a CD-R or DVD-R. an entire hard disk backup can be many slices, so this option is ideal if you want large media files or documents for easy access later. Important files with sensitive information may only be attached to a back-up cloud services such as Mozy. Need command prompt for Acer Aspire

The Windows Backup and Restore feature allows you to save files and system images to external backup devices such as hard drives and flash drives. However, backing up files become problematic if the directory your backing up files from isn't configured properly, or if you're having issues with the devices you're backing files to. There are ways to solve or work around backup problems quickly and safely.

Hard Drive b> A backup will not complete if the files you're backing up exceed the amount of space left on the external hard drive. If you're backing up large system files, Microsoft recommends saving the backup to an external hard drive that can hold at least 200 GB. If you're running out of space, you must delete content to create space for others or use another hard drive. Error Codes In some cases, Windows displays the following error codes when it's unable to complete a backup: "0x80070001 (Invalid Function)" or "0x81000037: Windows Backup failed while trying to read from the shadow copy on one of the volumes being backed up." These error messages usually appear if Windows is unable to backup a specific library or if you opt out of adjusting your backup settings and settle for the default settings in the Windows Backup and Restore Feature. Reparse Point b> If you're unable to backup a specific library and run into error code messages, removing the reparse point allows you to complete the backup. A reparse point is a file that contains information about the user on a computer. If it doesn't point to a location that contains some of the data you want to backup, error messages appear when you try to back up your files. Type "CMD" in the Start Search box to open the Command Prompt. In the Command Prompt, typing "DIR /AL /S" and pressing Enter lists the reparse points. Each entry says "JUNCTION," which also means reparse point. The entries also tell you the location of the reparse points in Windows Explorer. If you locate a specific reparse point in Windows Explorer, delete its mounted volume from the device's Properties. Once deleted, you should be able to back up your files. Discs b> If you're backing up files to a disc, you'll run into problems if the discs are non-rewritable and already contain data, or if they are severely scratched or damaged. Non-rewritable discs can only be used once, while rewritable discs can be used to read and write data several times. If the CD or DVD you're using is severely scratched, the optical disc drive spins harder than usual in an attempt to read it. If it's incapable of reading the disc, the backup feature may freeze or display an error.
Windows backup or restore errors 0x80070001, 0x81000037, or 0x80070003

Dell datasafe online will not restore my files!

Never, Never use anything that any vendor gives you as your absolute only backup because most times it won't work. Even things like System Recovery don't work most times.

It's so much easier for you to back up your own data by simply copying and pasting it to a USB External Hard Drive or a USB Flash Drive. Most of everything you need will be in your My Documents Folder which will include My Music, My Pictures, Downloads and My Videos.

You can copy the whole My Documents folder or you can copy individual things within it.

You're probably going to have to live without your data this time around.

Also look into the Cloud Technology for backing up your own data. Google Cloud will give you 5GB free that you can access anywhere and anytime.

Error message driver is in a loop. need to reinstall drivers but need to backup files must back from dos prompt computer has shut down windows and i am not able to get to start menu. I am afraid if I run...

1) Installing drivers doesn't affect files, but reinstalling Windows will.

2) Make a BartPE CD (on another computer, of course). Boot from the CD. That'll give you Windows. Use it to back up any files you want backed up. (Back up to an external drive.)

It's a bit of work, but a very handy CD to have available. (You can do the same thing with a Linux Live CD if you have one.)
