I am replacing the transaxle on my Craftsman Riding mower model #917.270750. I need to remove the drive pulley from on top the old transaxle to install it on new transaxle. I removed retainer ring but pulley won't come off.

Hi, well these can be real hard to remove, there are two ways to do this, with heat, form an oxy torch, or blow torch, or use of penetrating oil .or Use Automatic Transmission Fluid or Acetone to loosen it (Also make sure there are no "Keys" that need to be removed)
Or use a Pully/Gear Puller. See below.

Drive belt diagram model 917-276051

the closest thing to a "drive" belt diagram would be in the owners manual
the horizontal (front) end would be to the pulley at the engine that the deck belt(s) are not attached to. There is a set of mid pulleys where the direction is changed from horizontal to vertical for attachment to the transaxle.

If it is the drive belt do the following place your mower on a level surface set parking brake, remove mower deck, remove belt from stationary idler and clutch idler, pull belt slack towards the rear of tractor , then remove belt upwards from transaxle pulley by deflecting the belt keepers, then pull the belt towards the front of mower and remove downwards from engine pulley Install new belt in reverse procedure

Steps needed to change transaxle belt

lift the front of the tractor up at least 3 feet and lower the mow deck to give you clearance. push the clutch pedal and lock it down to release belt tension. remove the mower belt from the engine pulley only. remove the trans belt from the idlers about midway back then from the trans pulley & finally from the engine pulley. put the new belt around the engine shaft above the mower drive pulley but not on the drive pulley then around the trans pulley. now you can put it on the drive pulley and finally on the idlers. make sure you have it under all the various keepers or the belt will shred in like 10 minutes. release the clutch pedal & check the belt again to ensure it is in the correct place. replace the mower drive belt & ensure that didn't come off other pulleys in the process. lower the front of the tractor and test

I'm having trouble replaceing the motion drive belt on my LT1000 lawn tractor. The mowing deck is off, the old drive belt is off. I can't get the belt around the transaxle pully. Any suggestions?

Often there is a keeper on the back of the pulley, and the belt must go inside the keeper. Get an inspection mirror up in there to look if necessary. Start by putting the belt on the transaxle pulley, then on the PTO pulley, then on the idler, last have someone sit on the mower and depress the clutch pedal while you put the belt over that pulley.

Craftsman riding mower wont accelerate

Have you checked the condition of the belt which transfers power from the engine to the transaxle? It could have slipped off a pulley; or, even worse, it could have broken. This belt is often difficult to access without removing the mower deck.

If the belt is in place, and you still get no movement, you likely have a transaxle problem.

How to remove the drive pulley, and install a new Woodruff Key?

Wayne Train Hi Bobbyak, if you still need to know, there is no key. It is a D shaped shaft, the pulley has the D cutout built in. It is a tight fit to pull off, but it will come off with some wiggling effort. There is just enough room. Remove the belt. Mark the side facing the trans for when you refit. Don't give up and don't drop the transaxle. I just didn't catch the reason you wanted to remove the pulley.

What is causing my drive belt to slip off the transaxle pulley on my 2001 craftsman 42'' 15.5 hp mower?

The belt has worn out. You need to replace it. They can look fine, but they stretch over time.
Best regards from someone who's been there,

Craftsman model 917.271814 will not go forward or reverse. Heard a "click" and mower stopped moving; engine and blade still running.

Check the drive belt that runs back to the transaxle,it sounds like it broke. If the belt is in the pulley check to see if the transaxle pulley is turning when the clutch is out. Also make sure both wheel axle keys are in the rear wheels. If all this checks out the transaxle may have broke, look underneath to see if it is broken there.
