  • Position the pipe wrench tightly above the drive belt pulley to prevent the crankshaft from rotating when you unscrew the drive belt pulley.
  • Fit the proper-sized socket onto the bolt that holds the drive belt pulley to the base of the engine's crankshaft.
  • Hold the pipe wrench with one hand, and with your other hand unscrew the bolt using the socket wrench.
  • Pull down on the pulley until it slides off the crankshaft. Slip the drive belt off the pulley.

The transaxle (transmission) has a fan fastened to the drive pulley. It is possible that you belt has jumped off of the pulley on the transaxle and this broke the fan.

Aliens 936056 46" hydro tractor i release the clutch and drive won't engage. It makes a grinding noise.Like its not engaging all the way. any idea what is wrong?

Did you have to remove the pulley on the top of the transaxle ? If so is it possible the shaft key that locks the pulley to the shaft fell out. Did you replace the drive belt because it broke or was it not pulling before you changed it? There is also a square shaft key on each wheel that locks the wheel to the axle shaft.

I cannot get my Poulan riding lawn mower to go into gear. What am I doing wrong?

Check your drive belt underneath the engine (on a crankshaft pulley) and make sure it is connected to the drive pulley on the transaxle (this area is under and probably just behind the seat. Don't confuse this drive belt with the belt that runs the blade mandrells on top of the cutting deck.

I'm having trouble replaceing the motion drive belt on my LT1000 lawn tractor. The mowing deck is off, the old drive belt is off. I can't get the belt around the transaxle pully. Any suggestions?

Often there is a keeper on the back of the pulley, and the belt must go inside the keeper. Get an inspection mirror up in there to look if necessary. Start by putting the belt on the transaxle pulley, then on the PTO pulley, then on the idler, last have someone sit on the mower and depress the clutch pedal while you put the belt over that pulley.

Craftsman model 917.271814 will not go forward or reverse. Heard a "click" and mower stopped moving; engine and blade still running.

Check the drive belt that runs back to the transaxle,it sounds like it broke. If the belt is in the pulley check to see if the transaxle pulley is turning when the clutch is out. Also make sure both wheel axle keys are in the rear wheels. If all this checks out the transaxle may have broke, look underneath to see if it is broken there.

Loss on drive on Poulan Lawn Tractor

Check to make sure the belt is not broken or did not come off the transaxle pulley, you can check by removing battery from under seat and pulling battery box out to examine top of transaxle,Pay close attention to the wire belt guide on the rh side of the transaxle pulley it should be close to the backside of the belt after it is reinstalled. If you recently may have removed the rear tire make sure the square key on the axle didn't drop out.Is the tractor a hydrostat drive? If so make sure brake is not stuck on,if it was it would make a grinding noise.
