Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

2 Answers

Hi, I have a Whirlpool Gold fridge. Our ice maker doesn't seem to be working anymore. I don't know why. I've tried cleaning it a few times. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Brian

Thank you for the reply. I checked the water line and it all works as we can get water easily. The arm isn't staying in the correct position, which could be the problem. Any suggestions on how to fix that? Thanks again.

Bundydavis,

Open the freezer door and then the ice maker door and look into the ice maker tray using a flashlight. If the tray has water you have one of two problems. Either the heater is bad that releases the cubes when they are done or the motor is bad that spins the unit to eject the cubes.

Both the heater and the motor can be checked if you know how to use a DMM and have a good set of mechanical/electrical skills. This website http://www.retrevo.com may have the schematic for the unit which would help you. If not try http://www.repairclinic.com . They also would have the parts and the entire ice maker if the unit is beyond repair. In addition repairclinic has very good videos showing how to replace most items. Give them a look first.

If the icemaker does not have any water in it you probably need to change the filter. If you do not have the manual the two websites I mentioned will be helpful to get the filter changed.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

I would first check to see if there is an ice cube or two stuck in the ice maker.
Then make sure that the frig is not on top of the water line, blocking water from getting through the line, (especially if you have moved the frig recently).
If neither one of those suggestions are it, then make sure that your water filter is not clogged; if you have one connected to the line.
And if none of these help, then make sure that the shut-off valve is turned on.

Have you tried propping the lever open with something to see if it will make ice that way? If it does, then you could make do with that for a while. If it doesn't, then you will probably have to replace the ice maker.

    Good Luck!

Hi. I have a Whirlpool sise by side gold

Is the freezer cold enough? Should be close to 10 degrees.
Is there water or ice in the ice mold? If not put water in it and see if it dumps the ice after it’s frozen. If there is ice, lift the cut off arm and let it drop to see if it will start.
If it does dump the ice but don’t refill with water.
Try swapping the wires on the dual water inlet valve. Then try the water dispenser. The water should go to the ice maker. This will tell you weather or not the ice maker valve is working and if the line is clear.

The water inlet valve on the back of unit opens when the ice maker needs water. If the valve doesn't seal good because of sediment or wear it will continue to drip and when the water reaches the ice maker supply tube it will freeze. You can take the water line off the valve and watch to see if it drips.

Whirlpool Gold Refrigerator (GS5SHAXNLOO) Ice maker not running, some ice in maker melted together

I have the same model. This has happened to me several times (usually when the door was kept ajar without notice).
Simply open the door, take a common hairdryer and blow at high speed (hottest also) all around the area of where you can feel the ice in the tray, but hasn't dumped yet. It will usually take about 5-8 minutes of consistently moving back and forth around that area. What has happened is the lines bringing water to the trays have frozen over. When you "thaw" them out, the ice made will dump in about 45 minutes. When you hear the ice fall, you will know it's in working order again. I have NOT heard this is a "flawed" icemaker, only that it is hypersensitive to freezing lines when a door is left ajar. In your case, to prevent this from happening again. If you shut the icemaker off again, make SURE you turn off the source of the water feed BEFORE you turn off the ice maker. By doing this, the lines will empty as it makes it's last tray of water. Try that - very confident it will fix your problem!

Whirlpool gold moder GC5SHEXN503 side by side-ice maker not producing ice anymore--water dispenser works fine--laser lites seem ok---no ice jam--no water filling ice molds

Put some water in the ice maker and see if it will kick a batch out. If it does make a batch but does not make any more then replace the water valve. NOTE: the water valve is a dual purpose valve that supplys water in the door and supplys the ice maker. If the ice maker does not kick out a batch then something is wrong with the ice maker. One easy component to replace is the ice mold thermostat.

Whirlpool gold ice machine not working

The most likely cause is the water solenoid behind the fridge. Take an ohm meter and test across the two terminals and it should NOT ohm out (beep). If it does not ohm out I would replace the P.C. Board kit, emitter & receiver icemaker control

Whirlpool Gold Ice Maker Quit Working

IF THE FRIDGE IS COOLING AND FREEZING WITHOUT AND HASSLE THEN YOU DONT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH YOUR CONTROL BOARDS.ALSO IF THE WATER IS STILL COMING OUT THE WATER SIDE OF IT.YOU NEED TO LOCATE THE WATER VALVE AND CHECK IF THE VALVE TO THE ICE MAKER IS NOT BLOWN THAT MIGHT BE THE CAUSE OF THE FRIDGE NOT MAKING ICE.

GOOD LUCK.
