Question about IBM ThinkPad R40 Notebook
The r40 has no hardware switch. it has a software switch. you must first determine what type of wifi card if any is installed. most of the stock cards are intel or cisco and the ibm support site has the software used to control them. sometimes, thru the network connections, windows can take control if the drivers are installed.

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

I don't think the T30 has an actual physical switch for the wireless. The ThinkPad button will show you how to do the wireless setup/repair. If you have Bluetooth on it, the Bluetooth indicator should be near the hinge.

SOURCE: where is the wireless switch
Use Fn + F5 (most thinkpads) to enable your wireless.
If you are used to a menu, visit www.lenovo.com (the producer of IBM Thinkpads for ages) and download System Update (a program which will download a lot of updates and drivers for your Thinkpad)

Unfortunately you cannot download the recovery CD for free, you can download them but it is going to cost you.
Take a look at this site for all IBM Thinkpad recovery CD's >>>>
Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!
