Question about Acer Aspire 3680 Laptop
I ve just get my second Gateway p-6860fx laptop (I replaced my first one due to a self-shut down problem). However, I suspect there might be something wrong with this one too.. Firstly the HD is frequently working and making a noise which old HDDs do and brand new ones shouldnt (especially only few programs installed on windows) and the overall performance (file accession, startup etc of this machine is lower than the one I got initially), secondly the gaming performance is far worse than I hoped, NFS Carbon runs awfully at maxed settings (the playing is far from being smooth and there are even 1-2 second long frozen screens) and interestingly this condition does not get any better when the settings are at lowest possible. Also, in contrast to what people say Crysis is not playable at very high settings and even if the settings are very low the game is not playing smoothly. My 3dmark2006 score is 7448 which is plausible for this machine I think, however I do think the performance is low in the games I tried. Are there alternatives to 3dmark? How can I get fps count on crysis? How can I solve these problems?
Thank you very much
When you start to shut down Windows XP, it has to quit, or "kill," any live
applications or processes that are currently running. So close all applications first.
However, some applications and processes are always running in the background.
You can reduce the amount of time that Windows XP waits for those applications and
processes to close before Windows XP kills them.
1. Open registry editor
2. Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop. Set the
WaitToKillAppTimeout and set the value to 1000. Select the HungAppTimeout
\newline value and set it to 1000 as well.
3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control.
Select the WaitToKillServiceTimeout value and set it to 10000.
4. Close the Registry Editor.
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and locate the following key in the registry:
2.On the EnablePrefetcher value, change the setting from 3 to 5 (decimal).
3. Close the registry editor and restart your computer

I have both the 6860 and the 7811. Either one is a good gaming computer (the 6860 is more powerful than servers were a couple of years ago, and the cooling is what you'd expect for a machine that's expected to generate a lot of heat.) I can't hear my hard drive (although their choice of WD bothers me) at all in a quite room.
I'd suggest that you contact them, ask for this to be escalated to a supervisor or level 2, and have the replacement replaced. (BTW, 60fps on WoW with the stock CPU isn't bad, and it runs for hours and hours.)

1st of all you can not expoect great gaming perfomance in Notebook.
even the notebooks having NVEDIA Gforce 8400, 256 MB was not even comparable to my old desktop having NVEDIA 6200, 256 mb in a AMD Sempron 1.8 Ghz, 512 RAM desktop PC.
If you are a hardcore gamer, go for PS3 or XBOX 360, or may opt for a Desktop with good graphics.
And yes, there are NO alternatives to 3dmark. Plus to get good performance, look at the HEAT level of the Notebook.
Laptops freeze maximum time due to processor heating.
If your Notebook freezes due to heat in Less than 3 hour, its time you contact for a replacement.
