Question about Craftsman Garden

1 Answer

Model 917.272911 20hp twin cyclinder B and S eng. 42inch cut. From the front facing the engine, the left side is not working. I have changed the spark plug twice, switched the two armature mags from one side to the other. There is spark and the engine runs ok on one cyclinder. Spark plug is wet and appears to have fired but when I take the plug wire off it makes no change. There is compression on both sides. I am now lost as to what the problem is. Please help, thanks. Bob

If the plug is wet that cylnder isn't firing. Use a compression gage to see if both cylnders are the same, you may not have enough compression on that cylnder. You may have lost valve clearance on that cylnder, its usually exhaust valve. A simple valve adjust ment will correct it.

Which cyclinder is 3

Looking at your engine, the pulleys indicate the front of your engine, the odd numbers 1,3,5,7, are on the right hand side from the front, 2,4,6,8 are on the left side (description for an 8cyl motor). Same applies for 4,6,8,10cyl engines.

What side is the number 8 cyclinder spark plug is on?

AS you look at the engine under the hood your will see that the 8 cylinders are arranged in two banks of 4. One bank of 4 cylinders is just slightly more towards the front of the car/engine than the the other. The cylinder that is closest to the front of the engine is called 1 cylinder, as you look at the engine: this is the cylinder on the front right. Fords and Lincolns number the cylinders 1, 2, 3, and 4, front to to back, on the right and then 5, 6, 7, and 8, front to back, on the left bank. Number 8 cylinder is the back left as you face the engine. I keep making reference to the orientation of the viewer when calling the engine left and right. Everything above is correct when looking at the engine under the hood. But strictly speaking the engine is labelled from the point of view of the direction of the vehicle so the right cylinder bank that you look at is actually called the 'left' cylinder bank and vice versa. Do not worry about this gratuitous confusion the cylinder 8 is still the one closest to the windscreen /firewall

I need to add brake fluid to the master cyclinder

Open the hood. Look on the drivers side. Find the Battery. Now as you are facing the vehicle go just to the left and a bit farther in than the battery. There is a yellow cap with the Brake symbol on it. That is the reservoir for the Master Brake cylinder. All the check and fill points have a yellow caps. ie transmission oil, eng oil, rad coolent, brake fluid, and power steering fluid.

My deck cuts shoter on the rt,ie uneven

Check your tire pressures:
10 psi. for rear tires.
14 psi. for the front.

Note that according to MTD:
Making sharp right hand turns. Twin-blade mower decks are designed with the discharge on the right side and two side-by-side blades. The side-by-side twin blade decks have the left hand blade positioned slightly forward and in front of the right blade. This provides cutting overlap when traveling in a straight line. As a result, the tractor should mainly operated making primarily left hand turns when cutting. During left turns this cutting overlap is maintained. If turning right when, it is possible to negate this overlap and leave an uncut strip.

What is piston order on the left bank and right bank of car

not sure if you mean firing order or you want to know which cyclinder is which. to determine which cyclinder is which... look at the motor from the side... you will note one side is further (farther) forward then the other side. that's cyclinder 1. next across from it is 2 and so on.
