How do you know if the thermostat or the compressor is bad? The light comes on, but no cooling. Is either something I could replace myself? How expensive are the parts? The unit is 6 yrs old.

If the unit is not cold and the compressor of fan is not running, you can use a jumper wire between the wires attached to the control unit.
The part is available on-line for under $40. Replacing it is tough because removal is blocked by the bracket holding the button switch.
I have posted removal and installation instructions elsewhere on this site.
Good Luck.

A amana French door fridge no fan water or.icemaker lights come on but no fan turning on or cold

Many Amana model fridges have the freezer fan wired through the bi-metal thermostat that is clipped to the evaporator. Either your compressor has a bad start device and that is why it is not cooling, or the compressor IS running and the unit has lost its refrigerant charge. Running compressor with no cooling = buy a new fridge.
Compressor hot, but not running = start relay replacement to get the compressor going. Start Device 8201786

I have a mcbr1020w 10.0 frig. will not come on. just replaced the start device.

What does it mean "does not come on"?
Is it not cooling despite the compressor is running (in this case cooling liquid is lost), or is the compressor not running (nothing to hear, in this case the thermostat is defective) or may be when you open the door, there is no light inside (then the refrigurator has no power).
So check light (no, power is missing)
Check compressor(nothing to hear, thermostat is defective)
Compressor is running (to hear, cooling liquid lost)
The replaced start device you can check by using a bridge (cable with two clamps) between the contacts, but please do that only when you are familiar with electricity, it's not without danger. At best ask an electrician for help.

Why is Hotpoint RLA64T Fridge freezing up after new thermostat fitted?

Make sure that the temp probe from the thermostat is located exactly where the old one was. If it had a plastic sleeve on the old one, the new one will need that sleeve. You shouldn't need to calibrate the control if it is the one specified for this model. If it was a generic replacement then possibly it could need some adjustment.

Hotpoint RLA64T fridge freezing up after new thermostat fitted

WHEN U TALK ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT U MEAN THE COLD CONTROL THERMOSTAT OR DEFROST TIMER THERMOSTAT? WHEN UR PROBLEM SOUNDS MORE LIKE THE DEFROST TERMINATOR OR BAD HEATING ELEMENT, LOCATED ON THE FREEZER EVAPORATOR COILS? IF ITS STAYING ON ALL THE TIME U HAVE A DEFROST ISSUE? OR BAD SEALS ON DOOR AND DIRTY COMPRESSOR

Possibly a bad run capacitor, have a service tech test it and replace if it is bad. That clicking you hear is the internal overload in your compressor clicking off on high heat/amp draw and then cooling down and resetting itself.

Hi there

There are 2 possibilities

1. Bad thermostat (cold control) there should be power to both terminals on this, if there is only power to one then the thermostat is the problem.

2. ADC failure, there should be power at E8, that is power input to the board there should also be power at E2 (return from the thermostat), this input tells the ADC to switch the compressor on. Check for power at E3 this is the red wire that feeds the compressor. If you have power here then there is a problem between here and the compressor, a wiring fault.

I think however that it will be either the thermostat or the ADC

Hi my jaguar x type 2002 2.5 v6 has been regassed and no leaks found but its not cooling the air I have checked all fuses and relays and they are all ok is there anything else I could try myself

Just two things without equipment. (That I know of). Is the clutch pulled in and the compressor running? If so, is the larger line coming from it cold? DON'T touch the small one! It could be very hot. If the clutch is not engaged, follow the larger tube from the compressor toward the fire wall. There is a low pressure safety switch that could be bad and can easily be by passed to check. Unplug the two wire connector and jumper those two wires. Be sure the AC control is set to "MAX COOL" and your thermostat is as low as it will go. Let me know if the clutch is engaged or the compressor running. You could have a 12 volt compressor with no clutch. They are out there. Roger
