Parts upgrade

The 333/400 is the speed of the RAM in MHz 333 and 400 MHz. That corresponds with PC2700 and PC3200 that is in your specification.
250 GB hdd will work. Make sure that it is IDE and make sure that you connect the jumpers for master/slave the correct way.
As for the graphic card. If you have this one 'VGA SPARKLE 7300GT 512MB DDR2 128BIT PCI-X' than it will not work because it is a PCI-X card not an AGP card. You will need an older card for this motherboard.

best regards

Intel Desktop bord D845GVSR with Windows XP

If your system hangs up, instead of re-starting it hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and then click on End Program. As far as your Desktop Board go to and type in Hardware Compatibility List. There will be a listing of the hardware that is compatible with Windows XP. It may not be compatible that is why it is hanging up.

Gigabyte GA-8KNXP not going to POST

You can find leaky caps...
Anyways, those boards have very small inductors that look like caps and are used as pico fuses on most all peripherals and controller chips. Check that they are not blown and replace them with something from DIGIKEY or MOUSER
Also starting with the most simple, check that the power supply itself has not gone into SHOCK. unplug it from mains and TOGGLE the voltage selector switch, MAKE SURE it is back to 110 or whatever you need.
I know it sounds weird but I have resurrected MANY PC's that way.
Other then that it sounds like you are well on your way to finding the defective component on your own. just thought I would throw in the fiew things that have caught me off guard in the past.

Microsoft has a program that will run on your current PC. It will check & confirm if your system can handel Vista. It will also show you what is not compatible with Vista. It will check every piece of hardware including your board & even your printer if it's connected & turned on.
It's a must use program for people who are thinking of installing Vista.
