Question about Canon ImageCLASS MF4370dn Laser All-in-One Printer

3 Answers

The fax function on my Canon ImageCLASS MF4370dn was working fine. After I scanned a document, then I tried to send a fax. I put the documents on the sheet feeder (not the platen). After pressing the "Fax" button, then dialing the recipient's phone number, then pressing "Start", I get a message, "Original Size Letter" and nothing happens. If I then press the "Start" button again, this message is displaid: "Scanning", then the machine makes a noise as if scanning. Then I get the message, "Next page: start. (new line) End scanning: OK" I turned off the machine and turned it on again. But the same process happens. I didn't change anything in the machine's setup menu. But I suppose something was reset when I used the scan function of the machine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks very much. dgardner@ucsd.edu

Thanks for your reply. I wonder how it could be a corrupted driver when I'm performing all the operations described above on the copier/ fax/ scanner itself and not from the computer.

  • dgardner760 Sep 30, 2010

I wonder how the problem could be the driver if the operations were done on the Canon machine itself and not the computer.

  • dgardner760 Sep 30, 2010

The problem was solved when I followed the directions for the Canon support person (see below). I opened the ADF cover. The black plastic flag sensor in the middle was in the up position. But I pushed it down, a motor activated for about 3 seconds, and the screen displayed "Available memory 100%". Then I tried to send a fax, and it worked. I think that pushing down the plastic sensor must have reset something.

Thank you for your inquiry. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you. We sincerely apologize for any difficulties you have experienced with the fax feature on the MF4370dn not working correctly.

You may need to check for possible obstructions in the MF4370dn ADF.
    Try the following suggestions:

    1. Open the ADF cover.

    2. Look for any obstructions. *Make sure the black plastic flag sensor is in the up position.

    3. Close the ADF cover.

    4. Open the ADF and check for possible obstructions in the ADF area.

    5. Close the ADF.

Note: Be careful not to get your fingers caught.

If necessary, reset the unit by cycling the power. Turn the power switch off and then back on again. If the issue persists, the MF4370dn may require service from an Authorized Service Facility (ASF). We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause...

I had already received the (somewhat) correct solution from a canon support person before I received this expert's reply, which was not as specific as the one from canon tech support.

  • dgardner760 Sep 30, 2010

Yes, those were the exact recommendations of the Canon tech support person. When I pressed the black flag from the up position to the down position, a motor sounded briefly, and the screen displayed a message "Memory available 100%". I didn't turn off the machine. But the fax functioned fine.

This is very strange indeed. Does it still receive faxes just fine? Have you tried just placing the paper on the platen and seeing if it will scan / fax that way? It sounds like a feeder issue, but can't be sure just yet.

Try that and let me know.

Thanks
Tim

Not sure if the information in this excerpt from a review on Amazon.com will help, but it might:
I was a little disappointed. This printer didn't turn out to be everything I thought it would be, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. First of all, you must know Windows Fax & Scan does not work with this printer. That is the let down of the year to me, but it's not Canon's fault... not necessarily. Turns out WF&S only uses WIA scanning drivers and this printer uses TWAIN. Thanks Microsoft. The computer never directly communicates with the printer, so the faxing is treated like printing. As a result, the faxing portion of the software doesn't work with it either.

This printer DOES come with software for scanning. It's burried on the CD, and you must explore the CD to find it. I believe it's only for the PC, however. As the other poster said, I searched all over for the scanning software I thought I installed. Turns out it was just a driver. I own Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat, so it's not much of a concern for me. They are both TWAIN compatible by the way. One thing I don't like about this printer is the need to press the scan button prior to scanning. This is not very convenient for a network printer. It's even worse if you have a long way to go to get back to your PC. By the time you get there, the thing may have gone back into power saving mode.

I've seen good reports on Canon's support, so you might try contacting them to see if they have a settings or updated driver remedy for this problem. Here's their site:
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support
Didn't see this problem reported on the net, so it could possibly be a corrupted driver- not sure.
Good luck, and hope this helps.

Canon imageclass D1120 printer says: feeder paper jam,

Hi Try this method

To "Settings/Registration Table"

You can specify the method for restarting scanning of documents when a paper jam occurs in the feeder.

For information on the optional products required to use this function, see "Optional Products Required for Each Function."

  1. Press b_in_add.gif(Settings/Registration) ? [Function Settings] ? [Common] ? [Scan Settings] ? [Feeder Jam Recovery Method].

  1. Select [From 1st Page] or [From Stopped Original] ? press [OK].

Details of each item are shown below.
[From 1st Page]: If a paper jam occurs in the feeder, scanning starts again from the first page of the document. [From Stopped Original]: If a paper jam occurs in the feeder, scanning starts again from the page of the document scanning was interrupted.

I finally got a solution to my problem, which is the same as this one. When trying to scan via USB, you have to make sure the unit is set to USB. On the top panel just above the LCD display, is 3 buttons, Copy, Fax, Scan. Hit the SCAN button, till the display says USB SCANNING. Then try to scan again. Good luck!

Scanning Multiple pages into one pdf

Scanning a multi-page document as a .pdf file reverts the settings for rotation, selected area, etc. to default for any pages after the first page. This applies to Mac OSX 10.3, 10.4, & 10.5. A simple, but tedious work-around is to scan each page as a separate file and easily recombine them using OSX Preview. Just open the first page, view the Sidebar, and drag-drop the additional page files into the sidebar. Save and it's all one multi-page .pdf.

I want to scan then send instead of scanning whilst sending

There are 2 methods of sending 1. Through memory, in which the machine scans the document then sends when all pages have been scanned. 2. In real time, in which the document is placed in the ready mode and the line monitor or handset is used to dial the number. In this case the document is not scanned until a response is heard from the other machine.
However, in the case of the memory being full, either of documents in the queue or if there are documents waiting to be printed (because of no toner or no paper) then the machine will not allow sending from memory.
