I'm going to make a few assumptions in my solution, based on the nature of the problem you're having. First, I'm positive you're talking about an Xbox 360 console, but I'm going to infer that it's an older model without the HDMI port. Next, I'm guessing your console has a Toshiba/Samsung drive, which is the most common drive in older units. And finally, because 99% of the time this issue occurs in modified consoles, I'm pretty sure your drive has been flashed with an alternative firmware. Assuming these assumptions are true, you need to flash your drive with the original firmware. Given the nature of this particular topic, I won't go into detail on how to do that, but a couple minutes on Google will tell be more than sufficient to find that information. Once your original firmware has been restored, the update will complete successfully and you can reflash your drive with the modified firmware of choice. The problem occurs because the latest update flashes the drive with Microsoft's new firmware to allow consoles to play games using the new GDX3 media. On Toshiba/Samsung drives, the update checks the drive's firmware and doesn't recognize it as the original firmware, causing the update to fail and report an E66 hardware failure error.

Keeps saying open tray on all games i try to play.

Your disc drive is bad. Probably the laser you will need to have it repaired by either microsoft ($100) or find someone local who can replace the laser or drive. If you replace the drive be sure to buy the same one (lite-on, benq, samsung, or hitachi) and have the firmware pulled from the old drive and flashed to the new.

Replaced hitachi disk driv e with a new one - the drive is not reading the games disk

Only the original drive can be used in the same XBOX. The only way to change the drive is to find, read, and transfer the original device's firmware to the new one. It will require a PC and a special program. It is not easy and will definitely void your warranty, but you probably voided it already by changing the drive. Here is a link to a decent tutorial to explain hooking up your drive to a PC and flashing the firmware: http://www.biline.ca/360_mod.htm

Try this, find a tutorial on youtube on how to disassemble your drive
then find out what make /model drive next goto richpsx and
buy the same drive then open the old drive and simply unplug
all the connections from the drives P.C. board and remove it
and plug it in to the new drive , after you remove the new drives
P.C. board.

And that will resolve your problem. with out flashing your drive.

f you are unsure of how to flash a drive DO NOT DO It!! Sorry for yelling I just don't want you to brick your drive when you don't have to. Only a modder or hacker would ever have to flash their drives because they want to either play backup versions of games burned to media or exploit the software in someway. Your problem is much simpler and will not get you banned in any way. Just purchase the same exact model numbered drive, ROM version is not necessary but if available purchase it to be safe. Open up new drive and remove circuit board making sure your very gentle with the 4 or 5 small ribbon cables you will have to pull from their little connections. Most ribbon cables will simply need to be pulled straight out but depending on manufacturer or model number some ribbon cables will need you to flip up a simple little locking flap and then pull out. This is very important, as soon as you remove the brand new circuit board out of your new drive, grab a felt tip pen and write something directly on that board that will identify that board as not being your original. The unique key that matches original drive to original motherboard is on a chip on the board your now going to remove from your non working drive. Once the board is removed from the drive all that is left is hardware so by installing your old board into your new drive hardware you now have a brand new drive with your unique code still intact. Since you have to open your device to do this and that's what you planned on doing anyway I still want to let you know what you already know that this will void your warranty. Make sure you open up your device first before you order the replacement because believe it or not 9 out of 10 times all you will need to do is open up your so called bad drive and clean the lens very gently with a Q Tip dipped in Isopropyl alcohol. Now back to your desire to learn how to Flash a drive, well guess what, you now have something to practice with. Put the new board you can't use in the old drive hardware and flash away on that one using different scenarios you make up yourself depending on what you want to learn and if it ends up getting bricked you will still learn something without risking your precious gaming console

Xbox 360 not reading games,CDs,DVDs

Hi,
you could do with purchasing the same drive as you have installed. if it,s a samsung they,re quite easy to flash. an hitachi has to have a chip attached to flash it, then chip removed once flashed. If you do an internet search for 360 DVD Drive Flashing Or 360 Flashing services. you should find what you need in your area/region.

Regards Mike @ compurepair.
