Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

6 Answers

PS3 either won't turn on, or freezes immediately. HELP!!!!

H Sony Bravia LCD TV which can support up to 1080i. I have, to my knowledge, correctly connected the PS3 with the TV using AV cables and an HDMI cable. Everything else has been correctly connected as well. Here's what happens when it doesn't turn on:

1) I flip the back switch On, and slide my finger over the front On sensor.
2) I hear the fans quickly, for only part of a second, start working, then suddenly shut down again, never coming back on for the rest of the session.
3) I notice that the HDD light near the USB ports are not on.
4) I notice that only the green light is On; this is on the PS3's front.
5) During all this, the screen is completely black, displaying no menu at all, and there is no audio.

Here's what happens when it does turn on:

1) I turn it on with the sensor
2) As usual, a little static comes on for the image(signaling that that session will turn on the PS3), and the PS3 menu starts to load. Fans go on, then immediately turn off.
3) The HDD light blinks a little and then is gone.
4) Following this, the screen will freeze in a matter of seconds or a few minutes. I cannot perform any updates.
5) I would then have to hold down the power button for 15 seconds to allow the system to turn off sustaining a solid red light. If it doesn't freeze, it turns off by itself, sustaining a flashing red light.

As a result of this, I cannot use the menu, play any games, or simply use the PS3.

If anyone knows of any possible solution for this seemingly impossible problem, please leave an answer.

Thanks

I first noticed the problem when I turned on the system and all that was on the screen were a bunch of dots and lines. I then reset my system to the standard composite AV output and had no picture or sound. My system is frying up around the power supply so I'm guessing that would be the issue. I've tried everything else that I can find on this site and it all leads to the same solution... Power supply. If anyone could give me some help on this it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Im so p***** off right now cos its just happened to me. I also read somewhere that you lose all your data if it does work again...I hope you dont cos I play games like Fallout 3, Littlebigplanet and MGS4 and I would rather lose my legs for the rest of my life than lose this data.

ours started freezing a few weeks ago... the fans would kick on for a minute or two cut off and it would freeze, we started putting a house fan on it and this seemed to help, now it will start to load the game and get into the main load screen and thats it, or it won't even get that far...

OK it sounds like a problem I had with one of the units that came into my shop, I do believe you will need a new part which means you will need to break the seal. I suggest you call sony and see what they say and what they will do for you. 1-800-345-SONY (7669)
If they want to charge you id say forget it and try it yourself.
i can send you a guide to help you fix it.

I am thinking a sensor board or a power supply could be others and its hard since its not in my face but let me know what sony says and letss fix this baby.

I do also buy broken ps3s and can help you find a steal on a used or new unit!

No signal. It keeps saying invalid format. I have tried changing the tv format to 1080i, 480p from the cable box and still won't get the right format.

We are here to do the best we can to help, we only ask that you do not forget to rate us before you
leave.

1 - Turn on TV and set input to port being used.
2 - Make sure PS3 is connected via correct cable.
3 - Power on PS3 via power button and HOLD IT for 5 seconds (release after the second beep). It should automatically configure your PS3 to the TV's native resolution for all settings.

please do the follwing above,

best of luck to you,

HDMI-can't get tv to stay 1080i

This is natural, the PS3 does not stretch the signal like the Xbox does so games play at there native resolution (720p) there is nothing wrong with your TV or your PS3 and you would not see any difference in the games graphics if it was in 1080i. I'm playing my PS3 on a 46" 1080p TV and my PS3 games look great in 720p.

PS3 wont go 1080i/720p

I don't think there is a way to set your resolution manually, bro. They do it all by auto. If I may make a suggestion... Turn off both the TV & PS3. Unplug your HDMI, then make sure both your TV & PS3 are turned ON. Now re-connect your HDMI. A TV tech once told me that these units "communicate" through the HDMI. This can only occure whilst they're up & running. This may help get you going on to 1080i.
p.s. PS3 games only output 720p, max! This isn't always the case for Blu Ray movies, but it is for games. Good luck!

Invalid format??

change the display settings to 1080i or 720p- his tv likely does not support 1080p.
