Have an old TEAC AR-40s reel to reel tape deck. Bought a new belt, but not sure how to install.

    Any suggestions?

Hello - Well, I got the belt installed on my AR-40s Teac reel to reel tape deck. It's a *****.....

First remove the top plate (remove any reels. the idler pulls up - (I tried to unscrew metal top. Don't try!) I then had to take out 4 phillips screws from the top of the deck, and two from the back.

I also took out four from the sides. (not sure I needed to...) I also removed the bottom fibre cover - 8 small phillips wood screws. Then I pulled out the deck unit ( which has an electronic section attached). Because of two cable assemblies, I could only pull out a short distance. VERY heavy. Anyway, stand the deck on end, and you can see the bottom of the main flywheel shaft. It has a ball shaped end, and just enough clearance for the belt to go under. I used a thin, stiff wire - bent a small hook- to grab the belt. Snake the wire from under the deck, under the flywheel - it will come out from under the wheel to the top of the deck.I then hooked the belt over the motor pulley, (to keep it from hanging down) and grabbed the belt with the wire hook, and pulled the belt under the flywheel. Be sure to first thread the loose belt between the wheel mounting post and the large flywheel, otherwise the belt will be outside the post instead of going directly to the motor pulley.

THEN comes the fineigling - you have to work the belt under the bottom of the flywheel shaft and push up towards top of deck. Then hold the belt against the flywheel and work the belt around the wheel.

Question - the drive motor has two pulleys with different diameters. Is that for 50 or 60 cycle power? Or what.....?

Have yet to test unit for speed. That may answer my question.

Hope this helps anyone attempting to do this. Not sure this procedure works for the 4010s.

Found a solution - anyone wants to know, e-mail me, or post your request.

This stupid website doesn't have a way to post a solution to your own question!!!

I wrote a complete solution, but it disappeared. Too tired to rewrite

ITS been a long time since I replace BELTS for VCRs and REEL to REEL , what I suggest is , if youre very handy with tools and know your way around electronics, you can perform the replacement of the belt, open REEL TO REEL to access where BELT is located , study how is install , and remove ONLY the parts thats blocking you to remove OLD belt, memorize the order which you remove the neccesary parts
then install new belt , and install back parts in the order that was remove , hope this helps , good luck , AJ

If you are not familiar with such work, I don't recommend trying to install belt(s). Replacing belts may involve disassembly of mechanism parts and critical adjustments to follow. Take to a pro/tech

If your X-10 has a separate drive motor for the capstan , it could be weak and in need of replacement.

The C-3X could have belt drive and the belts could be weak and in need of replacement.

How to replace belt 1250 reel to reel tape deck

Yes, Bob can do it, Russ in New Jersey can do it and I am in Chicago.
It is not hard to replace belts but that is not the only thing it will need. It is likely going to need brake pads, lubrication and some other parts to be recondition like the capstan shaft. Calibration would be needed as the age of the components will have changed. Changing just the belts just gets it going.

Auto reverse

You do not list brand and model but it is typical that the belt replacement is missing the mark in that the reel rotation sensor is not detecting rotation of the reel table and therefore trying to go the other way. The reels have to be turning in play mode. If they do not auto stop or the reverse function thinks the tape is at end.

Instructions for Teac Tascam 32-2B belt replacement. I have had this Reel to Reel Tape Recorder for a number of years and the belts have now perished. I have purchased replacement belts on ebay but could...

Ebay is the worse place to get belts- why do I know this? Well, as a servicer I am constantly replacing belts that are from E bay when clients can not get their decks to work with those wrong belts. While the counter belt is not critical the capstan belts are in a dual capstan system. The 32-2B is a X10 derivative so it will need proper servicing to work well. I am in the Chicago area and work on decks all the time as Skywave Tape Deck Repair just google it.

I have a single cassette deck Philips DC 900 when you hit the play button,it plays for about 5 seconds then stops and head retracts. Belts have been replaced

It's not seeing the takeup reel turning.
Either the takeup reel isn't turning or the takeup reel sensor has malfunctioned.
Check the belt to the takeup reel by doing a fast forward.
Will it fast forward? and is the takeup reel spinning during playback?

Repairing or replacing old tape decks

Hi m522posner

There is a surprising interest in "vintage" hifi products these days. Your tape machines probably needs new belts. Check this site out. You can get spares for your tape machine here. Belt kits are $17. He does repairs also, but the transport to and from may be an issue for you. I suggest emailing Bob, he may be able to refer you to someone in CA > I could do the repairs, but I am in Australia. :)

You could have a go at freshening up the belts yourself:)
