Riding Lawn Mower Common Issues

I have come across a lot of questions for Riding Lawn Mowers of late. Here are some common issues. When the mower cranks but will not start check the Operator presence switch to make sure it is working properly. This is normally located under the seat and is activated when the operator sits in the seat. Most mowers will not crank or start unless the operator is in the seat. Make sure you are pressing the brake Pedal all the way down. If this switch checks out and you still have no fire check for spark at the Spark Plug. If you have spark then your problem is in the fuel system. It takes a very short time for gas to gum up the fuel lines or carburetor in higher temperatures and bad gas will cause this problem. If you can look in the tank and see blobs of a dark fluid then you have water in your gas, change it. If none of this solves the issue and you post on Fixya for further assistance please be sure to post the Make, Model and Year of manufacture in your post. Part locations and electrical system design vary by all these factors. Good Luck

Craftsman riding lawn mower won t cut grass

Does it die when you attempt to engage the cutting deck? If so the you might have a clogged fuel filter, bad gas, dirty air filter, bad spark plug.
Or the mower engage switch may be faulty. They are located in different places on different mowers. But should be attached somewhere along the main pivot of the engage lever. Let me know if you need more assistance. Good Luck!!

I need the owners manual for weedeater mower, model 500

That is a very basic mower with a Briggs and Stratton 500 series engine on it. They're all the same. Please tell us the problem or issue and I'd be happy to assist. I work on those in my sleep. The owner's manual will basically tell you where to put the liquids in and how much. Thanks. James.

My cub cadet 1042 leaves a stip down the center when mowing. I have new blades put on by the dealer and this seems to be an ongoing problem.

I had the same. design of the deck is not good. grass will build up and insolate (like a donut) the blade from cutting the immediate blades. FIX - replace custom blades with "Gator Blades and the claws will free up the cluster of interferances of grass, kick it out, thus allowing the blade free space to cut the immediates blades of grass.

Hope this helps as it was my last trial of fixes. IT DOES WORK.

Will not stay started Runs for about 1 minute

fuel issue. probably has junk in the carb bowl that gets sucked up when the machine start. You might be able to get away with just taking the bowl off and dumping it out (you will see it there is junk in there. then dump out the gas thats in it and put fresh gas in. Ideally you should clean up your carb which is not that difficult. an air compressor on very low pressure will provide some assistance (10-20 PSI)

Wont stay running will start and turn off quickly

Either the fuel lines have gotten brittle and cracked, or the carburetor needs cleaned, or both. If you need assistance after this, just let me know.
