No hard drive in the last 30 years needed drivers installed except for a short time when SATA hard drives first hit the market with Windows2000 and XP. I believe that is an external drive usually used for backups. You did not post your operating system, and if this is a new drive or one you have had for some time. So I will use Windows7 and assume this is a new purchase:
>Try a different cable and a different USB port in case the cable or port went bad. It happens.
>Plug the drive into a different computer. Is it recognized?
>Go into Device Manager; is it listed?
>Enter Control Panel/System & Security/Administrative Tools/Create & Format Hard Disk Partitions. Is your drive shown there? If it is, Right click on it, then click Mark Partition as Active. Does your computer see it now?
If the answer is no to all the above, the drive probably failed.

Toshiba external hard drive not being recognized

I have the same problem. I can read/see the drive with my old computer but not the new one. I believe it's because the drivers for this are not current. Toshiba doesn't seem to have/provide current drivers for Win8. The drive has drivers for Vista and 7, but not 8. Does anyone know whether there are Win 8 drivers? Hard to believe Toshiba wouldn't provide that since 8 was out only a year after this drive was made.

Was a new or a refurbished hard drive was purchased? If new Replace the power supply instead. The power supply can cause hard drive failures even on new hard drives. Never purchase a refurbished hard drive neither

I have a emachines w3615 and it wont boot error message is pxe e61

I disable the lan boot w/no pxe support in the bios and put in a new hard drive 30 gig and it is great now.

I believe the hard drive went bad and it then tried to load an os from a previous network, which caused the PXE error. The true culprit was the bad hard drive.

My USB port on the hard drive seems to have broken off inside. What can I do? There is another DC port next to it, is there any way of connecting the hard drive to my laptop via this?

Disassemble the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive.
Purchase a new "empty" enclosure, for about $30, and "transplant" your disk-drive into the new enclosure. All your files will be accessible.

What OS are you trying to install? If it is XP and the HD is SATA you may need to set the SATA driver in BIOS to legacy OS. Hard to believe XP is legacy but I have had this issue w/Compaq laptops.

Simpletech 500 gb external hard drive

There is a power consumption work-around untill a Y usb wire can be purchased; the main power cable must still be used at all times but this workaround should only remain temporary!!!
Simpletech should have included this so laptop users could use the drive as their capacity is better than the packaged slimmer simpletech portable backup drives for laptops, which does include the Y cable....
1) unplug usb while powered and unknown hardware is present on laptop...
2) turn power switch off from the external HDD...
3) return power switch to on from the external HDD...
4) plug in usb connection to laptop...
Autoplay should read from external HDD!!!
**** Save some $$$ and buy a Y shaped cable to provide sufficient amount of power from laptop usb
ports, cause it's necessary to use 2 of your ports to provide power in addition to the main power from HDD to wall****

New Hard Drive, system recovery problem

The systems disc is for the drivers and utilities, and, yes, there should have been two discs with the machine. The A45 is new enough that it should have come with an XP disc, not 98. I believe there was a mix up and you have the wrong disc. If you can get the operating system to load with the recovery disc you have, then you can get the drivers at the link below. Some two disc sets will not load an operational system unless you have both discs. Since you were running XP before, I don't think you're going to be happy with 98. I'm going to suggest that you purchase an XP disc, or contact Toshiba, and let them know that the wrong disc came with the machine, they might send you the right disc. If you do have to purchase an XP disc, simply load the system, then go to the link bellow and download the drivers. If you need any further assistance, feel free to ask.
