Question about Bernina Virtuosa 160

2 Answers

My wonderful Bernina 1130 has served me loyally since purchase in 1988, often being used every day when I worked as a dressmaker. In recent years full-time work keeps me from sewing. My faithful Bernina is now sulking at the lack of attention and I have discovered recently that there a problem with power not getting through to the control foot. My local repair man says it may be control foot or computer panel issue but that one can no longer buy parts for repairs. I am aghast at this information as I thought my 'Rolls Royce' of sewing machines would be with me for the rest of my life. The problem seems to be intermittent, as if I unplug foot control from machine, then re-connect it, it will go whileever I keep my foot on pedal but won't go when I stop and try to start again. When I un-plug and reconnect, presto! it goes again. Are you able to identify where the problem lies? Also are you able to advise whether it can be repaired? Many thanks for your kind assistance Jenny

Contact an authorized Bernina dealer/repair center. The service technician can often tell what board needs to be worked on, take it out and send to Bernina. I just had to have work done on my 1130 and that is what was done. If that does not work, look up the number and call Bernina USA directly so they can direct you. While it's true that some parts are no longer obtainable, the machine boards can be serviced by Bernina USA. It's worth fixing.

Sounds like maybe the contacts/carbon brushes may be worn. Recommend taking it to a Bernina dealer. Sometimes local fix-all sewing shops don't want to take the time to find replacement parts for Berninas. Frequently, parts can be found as long as you are persistent and find the right source.

Also, probably not likely, but have you cleaned and oiled your machine lately? Sometimes they get unhappy with lack of attention.

How do I attach a twin needle post to my Bernina 950

Hello Erina
Sounds like you purchased and wish to use a twin needle which comes as two needles on a single needle shaft, correct? That is terrific and you have a wonderful machine.
Remove the needle in the machine just the same as you have been over the past 2 years. Unscrew the needle clamp screw, pull down on the needle or part of the needle in the machine and insert the new twin needle shaft into the needle bar. Tighten the needle clamp screw and thread the needles using two sources of thread on the top.
If the existing needle post is not coming out of the needle clamp easily, use a pair of pliers to grip and pull down. Cover the sewing surface to ensure that it will not be damaged as the pliers free the needle. If the needle is firmly embeded, you may need to give the pliers a gentle tap with a small hammer.
If using a zig zag stitch make sure that the width does not exceed the twin needle limit; otherwise as the needles swing from side to side they can hit the stitch plate and brake.
Happy Stitching

Does the Deco 340 Embroidery Machine use .ART or .EXP?

According to the manual for the Bernette Deco 340, the machine only reads .EXP+ files. ART files need to be converted to the EXP file type using the Bernina Embroider Software. (Even the designs on the Studio Bernina CD need the ART files converted to EXP.)

The manual is available from the Bernina support site: http://www.bernina.com/en-US/Support-5/Machines-en/bernette-deco-en . The direct link to the manual is http://www.bernina.com/getdoc/c6cc51e0-d5e9-4cb1-a7be-f164c0f4fdff/deco340_EN_GZD . (Note: you will need Adobe Reader or a similar program to access the manual.)

I'm surprised that you were able to get any .art files to work until recently.

I hope this helps.

You can probably use the Bernina 1031 manual for most of your purposes. The 1130 is a bit newer and has more buttons.

Stitch is not straight

When was the last time your machine had a routine cleaning and adjustment? It sounds as though you've got "play" in the mechanism that needs to be tightened by a sewing machine mechanic.

Bernina 1130 feed dogs won't feed fabric

On a Bernina 1130 the power on-off knob and the feed dog raise and lower knob look similar and are next to each other on the end of the machine, making it easy to lower the dog assembly entirely, without realizing it. Make sure you didn't accidentally lower the entire feed dog assembly by turning the feed dog knob: you can tell as you turn it if the dogs are up or down. On the Bernina 1130 the knob, like the power should be in the horizontal position to be working both feed and power.
