Did you have a dual boot on your system possible windows7 and linux? grub is a linux based dualboot system and it has possibly messed up your windows master boot record (MBR), and it is trying to direct boot procedure to the linux installation. in order to ensure your data safety, i advise you get it to a much technical person who knows more about dual boots systems ( windows/ linux) for recovery.

Computer will not shut down

You can always just unplug it and remove the battery. With no power source it will shut down.

Try running the check disk utility to see if it solves it.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc or a operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot from it. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with white letters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice the percentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run to completion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows. Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair when the options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recovery console and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

Are you saying it boots all the way up and shows you your desktop icons then shuts down?
Or are you saying it does not complete the boot up process before it restarts?

When i plug the power into the laptop windows will stop?

So does it boot up successfully when you just use the battery?

What do you mean windows just stops? I'm thinking you are saying that whenever you try to boot your system with the power cord plugged in, it gets so far then shuts off or freezes, right? If so, try running the Check Disk Utility.

No your operating sytem or boot files have a problem. Something is missing or corrupt in the operating system or boot files.

Try the steps below.

You will need a operating system disk or a repair disk to fix it. Insert it in the drive then boot from it. You want to get to a dos command prompt (black screen with white lettering) and type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
bootrec.exe /fixmbr
bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd

Reboot and see if the problem is solved. If not get back to the dos command prompt and run the check disk utility.
