Question about Waterway ® 2 Side High Quality 5 Hp Spa Pump 230v

1 Answer

I have replaced the impellers 2 times on my one year 5hp 2speed Waterway spa pump. There is a separate plastic ring that floats on the front of the impeller that seems to cause the problem. It seems to get eaten up and then i have to buy a all new pump parts.

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

The cause for those parts to fail is almost always running dry or poor water flow. Check for things like partially closed valves, dirty filter(s), leaks in the pump allowing cavitation or poor plumbing with too many elbows stacked together as the cause. Your solution(s) will vary depending upon the cause of the failures.

Should there be clearance between the wear ring face and the pump faceplate? After reassembling pump with new parts, I am noticing a 1/32" - 1/8" clearance/play between the two. It would seem that the...

No the wear ring should slide freely to cause a seal when pump is on. The water pressure inside the pump will push it into place. Also be sure the large side of the wear ring goes out so when it slides forward it seals.

Need to change out bearings

You will need a 7/16 inch open ended wrench, a bearing puller, a phillips screwriver, a 12" peice of metal electrical conduit, and the bearings.
dismantle wet end of pump down to the impeller. Remove the shaft cap at the back of the motor(small circular cap in back). use 7/16" wrench to hold the shaft under the cap whiile spinning the impeller counter clockwise untill impeller is off. using a 1/4" hex driver remove the 4 through bolt located at the rear of the motor. seperate end caps on motor housing to access the bearings. use puller to remove. use the 3/4" conduit to tap new bearing into place. Reassemble unit.

Make sure you have an o-ring kit for this pump first

Impeller replacement

The spacer plate (called a wear ring) should indeed be installed between the front plate and the impellor. The wear ring should be installed the correct way around, with the flat face against the front plate. Assuming that you're fitting the front plate correctly each time (it only fits on one way) there shouldn't be any issues. I can only assume that you have either fitted the incorrect impellor or it hasn't been tightened fully onto the motor shaft.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Ian Kime.

How do i remove impellor

The impeller in my 4 HP, 2-speed Waterway Executive High Performance 56 pool & spa pump has a brass coupling embedded in the back side. This coupling can be unscrewed from the motor shaft by keeping the shaft from rotating while turning the impeller in the reverse direction. Then the seal can be tapped out.
