Question about Honda Electrical Supplies

1 Answer

My older Honda EM3000 generator suddenly has developed an overvoltage problem. It now shows 200 volts output regardless of what setting you select (120/240). This generator was purchased new about 1983. I suspect the votage regulator but wonder if there could be other issues. Any suggestions?

The voltage can go down provided the engine RPM drops off. So check if the oil change and scheduled maintenance was done on time.
If the RPM is set up according to the load , the voltage will rise up , but if the voltage is low the Load connected can also be high.
So if in dry load the generation is low you might need a full check up,overhauling/cleaning out of the alternator, engine to get his back to shape.

I have an energy storm lifan 3600 watt remote start generator and since changing fuel in tank it starts and runs at full rpm only and will not idle down. Any advise on fix would be appreciated.

read you user manual but most small gen sets on starting come up to full rpms and stay there regardless of the load situation
it is the rpms that maintain the output voltage and cycles that has to be correct for when a load is suddenly applied

Low voltage out 79.2 volts

Randy, connect up your volt meter and try manually reving up the engine. Even a few hundred RPM can make a big difference in the generator output.

If that resolves the problem, then you need to adjust the high speed settings on the motor.

Adustments engine speed low rpm

You cannot adjust the voltage output. All generators are rated for 110-125 volt recepticals and usually have at least one 220-240 volt receptical for special appliances that require it such as water heaters, pumps, welders, air conditioners. When one of these higher draw appliances is connected and they begin to draw amperage, the gas engine will automatically increase rpm to produce enough amps. If your generator gauge is showing low voltage such as 60,80 or 90volts for example, then you have overloaded the generator and blown a capacitor, resistor or similar item.

Honda eu3000is generator surges

Inverter Generator Benefits
  • The EU3000 series generators are inverter generators. The generator features an alternator, which produced high-voltage, multi-phase AC power. This power is converted to DC power and then converted back to AC. This process is controlled by a microprocessor and is necessary to provide stable, consistent power capable of running equipment sensitive to power surges. This type of generator provides higher fuel efficiency and lower operational noise ratings in a lighter model than home and work generators produced by Honda.

EU3000i Handi Specifications
  • The Honda EU3000i Handi is a 3,000-watt inverter generator that features wheels, folding handle and a recessed convenience light. The engine is a Honda GX160, which features a 163-cc displacement. The AC output is 120 volts, with an average rating of 2,600 watts and a maximum production of 3,000 watts. There are three receptacles to include a 20A, 125-volt duplex and a 30A, 125-volt locking plug. The DC output is 12 volts and 100 watts. The EU3000i can hold 1.56 gallons of unleaded fuel, which will provide consumers with 3.6 hours of run time at 25 percent load for 7.7 hours.

1980 sportster not charging. battery is new and connections all seem good.. tested generator output at battery and it shows no increase at all while running.wondering if the problem is the regulator or the...

To find out which is bad, you have to check the maximum output of the generator. To do this, you'll need a good voltmeter and a jumper wire. First, remove both "A" and "F" terminal wires. One of the wires is a hot wire so don't let it short to the frame. Then set your meter's function switch to DC VOLTS with a range of 50 volts or greater. Connect the positive meter lead to the "A" terminal and the negative meter lead to an engine ground. Start the engine and run it at about 2000 RPM. MOMENTARILY connect a jumper lead from the engine ground to the "F" terminal. Your volt meter should read 25 to 30 volts. If not, polarize the generator but MOMENTARILY shorting the battery positive post with the "A" terminal and recheck the maximum output test. If you do not have at least 25 volts out of the generator, you need to service the generator. If you do have 25 or more volts from the generator, your regulator is probably bad.

good luck

I have a hobart 4030D this machine dont have output of voltage in the terminals and output of 127 volts, i cant welding need a solution because is my only machine

I'm not familiar with this particular machine, but in general, I can possibly help. If this is a DC output, AC transformer-type machine, the rectifier assembly may have gone bad (older rectifiers are usually selenium based and will develop high internal resistance over time). If the current output is step switched, the switch may be in trouble. Look for a circuit breaker which may have opened. A wire connection may have failed inside the machine. If this is a motor-generator machine, check the generator brushes for failure. Hope some of this helps!

Battery does not stay charged on my 20kw generac generator

WAS A 110 VOLT CIRCUIT RAN TO IT FROM THE NORMAL UTILITY POWER OF HOME OR BUILDING IT FEEDS?
NORMALLY THIS IS DONE IN A SEPERATE CONDUIT FOR CONTROL WIRES.AND THE FEEDERS ARE IN ANOTHER CONDUIT.
WITH A DIGITAL TEST METER,CHECK FOR 120 VOLTS AT THE BATTERY CHARGER IN THE GENERATOR CABINET.USUALLY THERE IS A RECEPTICAL TO PLUG THE CHARGER INTO.
IF VOLTAGE IS PRESENT AT THE BATTERY CHARGER AND INDICATOR LIGHTS ARE ON, CHANGE METER TO DC AND CHECK FOR 13.8 VOLTS OUTPUT FROM THE BATTERY CHARGER.IF YOU HAVE OUTPUT VOLTAGE TO THE BATTERY,AND IT IS DEAD,CHANGE THE BATTERY..

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU,BEST OF LUCK.....

How to adjust voltage output from generator ?

As long as your appliances are working properly I wouldn't worry. A 10V drop from the norm is not that crazy and certainly not abnormal. If it drops down to 205 or 200 then I would worry. I'm not familiar with the internal components of a home generator but I would imagine they are not as precise as the machines the power companies use. And when you look at it from a phase point of view its even less of an issue. There are 110-120V per single phase and 220-240V double phase. So on each phase your only dropping 5V out of that range. And as far as the needle jumping, again not very precise, and it will probably move even more while its generating. If the voltage does happen to drop more check for a loose neutral wire, that will often cause crazy voltages, but so far I see nothing to worry about.
