Question about NetGear WNDR3300 - RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Router

3 Answers

My 5GHz connection is listed under connections but is not available. The2.4GHz is available but very weak and slow. I know that the 5 is working because my laptop connects to it. (I'm using a Windows 7 64 bit Dell). Can you help?

    Hi Rodietom,

I have already disabled the Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter because I was getting an error message that Windows cannot load the drivers (31). Then I installed the updated Dell driver -- Atheros Wireless 1525 WLAN Minicard Desktop. I've just updated the driver as you said. Still can't get 5GHz.

How do I disable wireless zero config?

Hi, I won't be home in front of my computer until evening, New York time. Will describe what I see then.

    Thanks.

    Hi lyzmorato,

When I click on Manage Wireless Networks that use (Wireless Network Connection) it says Windows tries to connect to these networks in the order listed below

    I see

westendwireless Security WPA2-Personal Type: Any Supported Automatically connect

NETGEAR-24-G Security WPA2-Personal Type: Any Supported Automatically connect

Then, when I click on Network and Sharing Center, I see
View Your Active Networks_______________________Connect to network
You are currently not connected to any networks

Westendwireless is the SSID for my 5GHz connection
    NETGEAR-24-G is the 2.5GHz connection.

Right now, I can’t connect to either of them.

But I know the wireless is working because I'm using it now from my laptop.

    Thanks,
    Ronni

Now, it's about 45 minutes since my last email to you. For no
apparent reason, I am connected through the NETGEAR-24-G SSID. It shows
up as an available connection in the network and sharing center under
view your active networks. Westendwireless does not appear although it
    is the preferred choice.

  • rdenes Oct 01, 2010

OK... I restarted the WLAN auto config, but couldn't find anything called wireless driver properties under device manager. By the way, although it is a wireless router, it is connected to my computer with an ethernet cable. It did work this way in the past. How do i change router settings?

At this point, even the 2.5 connection is so weak that it won't hold.

Hi, won't be back in front of my desktop until tomorrow evening. Let me understand... are the directions above to use the wireless or to return to broadband? Right now, when I try to view available networks, only the wireless networks are visible. What's crazy to me is this all seemed to work in its current configuration until Dell "fixed" my computer after a "catastrophic failure - blue screen." I do need the router for my laptop, which right now has saved my ability to communicate. If I want to access the internet through the ethernet cable, do I have to change the driver or adapter settings? Sorry for all these questions, but as you can see, I'm working way above my knowledge level. Thanks for you patience.
    R.

If it works at 5GHz using your other laptop, it would be something to the wifi adapter of your Dell system. confirm the specification of your wifi adapter, update its driver and disable Wireless Zero Config service if available. Make sure to try the wifi connection with the adapter connected to your system if you are using a laptop. Let me know how it goes.

try going to Start, type services.msc in the Search box and click it from the list that will come up. From the list of services, look for WLAN AutoConfig and make sure its properties is set to Auto-Start and the service is started. Also, try going to the Device Manager, double-click the wireless driver properties and on its Power Management tab, uncheck the option to let Windows disable it. Make sure on its properties, the correct channel is also selected. Then on your router, set the wireless setting to mixed mode if you have any device using the N mode. If you only have B and G modes, set it to BG-Mixed if available, and set the channel width to mix. Save your changes and test the connection again. in case you need further help, could you indicate your Dell system model? Let us know how it goes.

no worries, we're here to try to help you sort this out. just post back with any updates.

sorry for the late reply. got hooked up with work. If the router is connected through an ethernet cable to the computer, this means, you are using a wired connection and not the wireless option. If this is the case, wifi is not needed unless you have another computer that needs wireless connection. If you need to access the router, often, you can go to 192.168.1.1, though to verify, click Start, then type CMD and click CMD.exe from the listed items. Type ipconfig/all in the command prompt and press Enter. Look for the default gateway which will represent your router. Once you have the address, type it in your browser to access it to get to the router configuration page. If prompted for a password, try leaving the user name blank and admin as the password if you have not configured it yet, otherwise, enter the correct user name and password. you can also refer to the router manual for the default name and password if you have not set it up before. Once you are in, you can change the wireless settings.

The information that I have provided is to set up and use wireless if
you need it. Based on your current set up, if your computer is connected
directly to the router via an ethernet cable, this means, you are using
a wired connection. If that is how you always do it, wifi is really
not needed. However, if you have another system like a laptop that will
use wireless instead of an ethernet cable, you can check the steps that
I have provided to verify your wireless settings/configuration. To continue to access your computer using ethernet cable, you just need to connect the cable to the network port (RJ-45) on your computer either desktop or laptop. If the network adapter of your computer is already set up with the proper driver installed, it should be able to connect to the network/internet. If you still need help with wireless, it may help if you can provide me the service tag of the computer, or at least its specific model. This way, we can try to check from the Dell support site on its actual wifi adapter driver.

Hello,
This might not actually be an issue. The 5ghz band is not available on a lot of devices. Unless your device says it supports 5ghz, you will not see it. All cell phones I know of, blackberry's, iphones, etc... use wireless G, or N 2.4ghz. New devices like HD streaming video players, media extenders, 2010-2011 MAC's and some new PC laptops support the 5ghz band. Your configuration screen shot looks fine. Verify that your devices support 5ghz.
My MAC book PRo 2011 supports 5ghz and so does my Asus Laptop. These two devices connect to the 5ghz and all my other devices, including my blackberry, connect to 2.4ghz.

Hey how do you up a 2.4/5 ghz dual band router up to 5ghz? I just bought this and my ps3 is still laggy.

You need to beware that 5Ghz may not be supported by your PS3, as this is not a wireless standard.

Wireless Standards are a,b,g & n

You probably should either relocated the router so its not obstructed by brick walls or metal objects.
Otherwise you can try move the PS3.

Hey I cannot add a coment to the last question I asked and you answered about the xbox360 and wireless N connection so I will try here. This website would not let me submit a reply instead it was telling...

those you mentioned are channel frequencies ..and in this case in a bandwidth pf 5 ghz...are shown like you mentioned..and they indeed have numbers from 1 to 12 in the other case...choose one in the middle for better reception...if you have problems with the speed just change it untill you have the max speed available ..
the issue is that it will affect the connection with the others and you will have to tune them to the new chosen band..but will all work ...
here is not shown the initial question ..but I believe that was related with the security of the connection ...for that ...enable the security for that you have to change the ssid ..and choose a name for your network ...Under this name you will see the connection when you are looking for it ..
second ..you have to enable and configure the password
Change the WEP (wireless encryption protection). Referred to by some router manufacturers as a Wi-Fi protected access, this is basically another layer of protection so that only those who know the password can log onto your network.
you can also leave the network with no password..but enter the Mac access ..in this case only the chosen mac addresses will have access to the network ..

in what regards the comment that you could not add to the first post ...you should take a better look cause in the right side it has a post comment little link ...it is not normal to have to accept an answer to post a comment ..the idea is to change comments with the expert until you are satisfied and after that to accept ..so ..probably you wanted to make another post and had to reject or accept so to be able ...but to post a comment its not right ..take a better look ...next time ..cause it may cost you money each time you make a new post ..

How do I force my built in wireless adapter to run in 5 Ghz mode (instead of 2.4) on a 802.11n network? It's an Intel WiFi Link 4965AGN

Does your router support the 5GHZ network?

My router supports dual-band at 2.4 and 5, and has separate SSIDs for each of them.

ie; network_1 = 2.4GHZ, network_2 = 5.0GHZ

So when I want the 5.0, I just connect to network_2

It's quite possible that though your wirelses adapter supports 5.0, that your router doesn't.
