Question about Computers & Internet

I have DSL through Qwest. My modem is a brand new ZyXEL PK5000Z. My router is a brand new Asus RT-N12. My connection frequently drops. Without warning, I will just lose connection and the modem retrains. This occurs anywhere from 3 to 100 times in a day. I make a living playing online poker, and when I drop my hand is folded. This has led to me not being able to work, costing me thousands of dollars. Qwest tech support has been trying to fix it for the last month. We've replaced the modem twice, replaced the router, redone the house wiring, checked for bridge-tap, replaced the entire line from my house to the local servers, replaced the port I'm on and moved me to a low traffic port, etc. The local repair guy told me that they've literally replaced everything they can physically replace. After being checked by their Tier 2 technicians, the problem has been moved onto Tier 3, where they've been having discussions on what the problem may be. While I trust that Qwest is doing what they can, this problem is effectively losing me potential income on a daily basis. I've come here for people with any ideas, however off the wall they may be. Estimated Loop Length: 15734 feet One of the mysteries so far is the modem occasionally has the power light turn orange, followed by a reboot. This of course leads to a dropped connection for a period of roughly a minute or more. This doesn't appear to be the entire problem, however, as the power indicator has only turned orange perhaps 6-12 times that I recall, whereas the connection has retrained perhaps several hundred times over the last month.

I have exactly the same problem and struggling with techs, since they have no idea I am talking about. We are at third modem/router stage.

This must be a problem with all of these routers because mine does the exact same thing. I had two actiontec pk5000 before this which had wireless issues then they sent me the zyxel and now it keeps dropping connection several times per day, very annoying! Let me know if any resolution is found?

I have hit the same issue, i.e. modem resets. What I have noticed is that this often occurs when the download demand increases. However, its not all types of downloads, i.e. Netflix works fine. However, if I merging files using meld, or have emacs display back, the modem begins to falter. I wish I could get to the logs and see what is causing it to tip over. So far, it appears to be blocked out :-(

If it is any consolation, I was notified by Century Link (qwest) tech support that overheating is a problem with this model. I have had two so far. They suggested that you remove the casing and expose the insides... Lol, instead of just selling products that work, they tell people this stuff!! Anyhow, since doing that, I haven't had any issues with the modem. Oh and I am literally going to fail out of law school because of this issue. Before finding a solution, I ended up emailing an assignment at 4am instead of 2am and they wont give me credit. Wonderful world we live in...

AGH this is interesting - we've been having the same problem. Same router. Same drops/resets. They'ver eplaced the router & are now sending out techs to look over the wiring & such, but this doesn't make me hopeful. You'd think they would sinply get a different kind of router/modem altogether. I find it odd that we all have the same router & same problem. Where are you all from? (general region) We are in western Montana. I'm wondering if there's something specific to an area, conditions, ANYTHING that we might have in common besides the router & ISP. We're stuck since we have no other options that have the connection speed we need for work. I'm very concerned that we'll have similar problems....

Same here, the only logical thing I can think of is refreshing the connection and I am going to do some research on how to make the pk5000z into a bridge so that I can do a repeater bounce signal from another router I have. Maybe if it is not the main bride it will work right... If I could ever figure out how to do it.

There should be something you need to type in the address bar. If that is in question search for the user manual for the router.

Trying to connect dir-615 to qwest modem pk5000z. Can you help? We have two computers hooked up to pk5000z.

It looks like the Qwest modem is a modem/wireless router. It's hard to set up a router through a router. It's easier to connect multiple devices with a switch or hub going through a router then a router through a router. Other then me trying to guess at the problem below is a link to Qwest's support page. They have an excellent support page with troubleshooters, manuals and guides. I would try there first because the support page is so good.
If you don't need the second router then please don't try to set it up.

I dont know ho to change the password on the PK5000Z Wireless Router

I just set up my new ZyXEL PK500Z, so happen to know this answer. In the ZyXEL Qwest Modem Configuration (launch 192.168.0.1), select Wireless Setup, then Wireless Security. Scroll down to Enter Security Key/Passphrase. Unless you changed this, Use Default is selected. If you want to use a password of your own creation, select Use Custom, then enter the password you want. Finish with Apply. Everything connected to your network will be prompted to re-enter the password. Is this what you were after?
