Even though the fans are running it doesn't mean the power supply is ok. Buy a PSU tester or bring it to a computer shop to have the power supply tested.

The computer wont start up, i can see a green light on the motherboard and nothing else. even the power button wont show up led light.

This can be a power supply problem or a motherboard problem.
One or the other has probably gone bad and must be replaced, if this is what happened.
Start by disconnecting all things from the motherboard except the CPU and memory.
If the system starts, then you've ruled out the power supply, CPU, motherboard, and memory.
If not, remove the memory and see if it tries to start. If so, then the problem is the memory.
If not, then it's definitely the power supply, CPU, or motherboard.

My Acer Aspire 6530-5753 laptop stopped charging the battery even though the power supply light was on--it's an aftermarket charger from Radio Shjack. The battery ran dead and it wouldn't run on...

This is not the motherboard. The batteries in laptops have electronic sensors in them. When they reach the end of life, they stop the computer from turning on. Once that happens it wont power on with the battery in or out. Batteries are not that expensive. Only about 25 dollars.

Computer powers up but wont display anything or respond to any buttons. HDD light flashes along with the CD drive. The problem started after holding down the power button for 5 seconds to do a emergency...

Weird though I dought that had anything to do with it. I would start by replacing the ram this will cause a no video boot as will a bad or overheated cpu. First b4 u spend money on the ram try hooking the external VGA output to another monitor see if u get boot screen. If not then start with the ram. If that doesnt fix it it may be a faulty motherboard which means time for a new laptop. Always get a shop to look at it b4 u trash though....

SUDDEN POWER FAILURE

The light on the motherboard will be on as soon as you plug the power supply in.
If, when you turn on the computer, the fan in the power supply does not start, your power supply is bad. In my experience, the switch in an ATX machine does not go bad--it's just a device to close a contact. If you really want to check it, though, find the place on the motherboard (lower right side as you are looking at the board with the top of the case away from you) where the wires from the front panel are plugged in--the ones that say pwr switch or something like that. When I do this, I remove the wires from the motherboard and short the two prongs where the wires were fastened.
In all probability, though, you need a new power supply.

Thinkpad r40 wont reboot

Batteries can develop a dead short and cause a no start. Try starting without the battery. Other things you can try is checking the power supply with an ohm meter,or plug it in and stick it in your mouth, but me personally, I'd use the ohm meter. Also check the memory, a faulty memory chip can cause this. If none of these work, them I'm afraid the problem may be with the power management chip on the motherboard. If the pm chip is malfunctioning, then motherboard replacement is your only option.
