Thanks! Open Cover problem - Lexmark 3470

I just wanted to thank you for your solution to this problem. Apparently I should have been a denist or a surgeon in another life because with you photos of how the lever should be aligned, I was able to "fix" the problem without the minor disassembly! Thank you so much!

This is the second 3470 I have had with the same problem when changing cartridges. First one by time I turned it this way and that I knocked the scanner out of line, so I replaced it. I really like this printer. This one when it happened I knew exactly what caused it so rather than disassemble it and knock the scanner off again I cut the plastic down to expose the culprit piece of plastic that came off. This time I dripped a dab of shoe goo on it. I figured I'd fix it once and for all. I popped it back on and it said please load paper on the screen instead of cover open. I just have to remember to treat it like a princess when I change the cartridge next time.

Why are there no solutions on this page??? I have the same problem. I'm a engineer and I took the printer apart and back together again. It still say cover open. I was looking for a pressure sensor but couldn't find it. I read yesterday that it is located where the gray lever goes into the printer. I haven't looked at it again but im sure I'll fix it now that I know where it is.

Just finished the ink and open the cover to replace ink. It came up the error message that cover not closed even it was closed. Have called Lexmark Service Department and because the warranty was just expired they asked me to buy another one! It seems that Lexmark product only works for one year within warranty. If I can't fix it myself I will not buy any Lexmark product again in my life.

This printer keeps indicating "cover open" though it is closed. Even after unplugging and plugging back in - the same message appears. Lexmark company owe us an explanation! This is a great printer ONLY if it's working.

This only a temporary solution, but it will allow you to still use your printer.

Here is a picture of the bottom of the cover, after some disassembly:
Thanks! Open Cover problem - Lexmark 3470 - c5215f1.jpg

  1. First disconnect the little approx. 5" gray connector from the cover at (A).
  2. With a little tilt, you can easily pull the connector out of the base.
  3. Lift the cover up until the lock at (B) prevents it from going up any higher.
  4. Hold the lock to the left to free the cover and push the cover into a vertical position.
  5. Coax the cover out of the hinges at the back, but leave the wiring connected to the base.
  6. If you look into the hole at (C), you can see where the problem is
  7. d2d8123.jpg
  8. There is supposed to be a little white arm in there that compresses the little button when the cover is closed, but, in my Lexmark, it fell to the bottom of the base and out of reach.
  9. If you hold this button in, the printer will think that the cover is closed and you can use it like normal
I just set the cover on the base about and inch forward of its original position. That way, I can press the button in while the cover is horizontal, allowing me to print and scan just like normal. You could also try shoving a pen cap or something into the hole to keep the button compressed.

Hope this helps! Donations are gladly accepted! but seriously, they are

Contacted Lexmark Canada 1 800 663 7662 and spoke to a manager (had to request this) explained printer problem politely and that the internet was full of people with same problem, she said Lexmark is aware of this issue and if i would provide serial # of printer, my name and address she would ship me a free replacement, my printer is 17 mths old so i don't know if they will replace regardless of age or if there is a time limit.
Remember to be polite and if they offer you a replacement to thank them,

My lexmark printer x 3470 will not says the cover is open but it does not appear to be and none of the controls will function.... help please??????

It could be due to the cartridges in the carrier or the sensor for the cover has become stuck. Open the printer cover and remove the cartridges from the printer. Close the printer cover. Unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, re-insert the cartridges and close the cover. Check for any errors.

Please help me find the spot to re place the ink cartige to an x 3470 printer

Perhaps the Lexmark X3400 Series User's Guide will give you a better picture. You can download it using this link: Scroll to page 52 for the instructions on how to change the print cartridge.
Sometimes the ink cartridge carrier won't position automatically to the middle even when the printer is on and the cover is open. Just unplug the printer from the power source. With the cover open, hold the solid white strip and gently slide the carrier to the middle of the printer. Load the cartridges. Close the cover. Plug the printer back to power source. Thank you for choosing Lexmark.

My lexmark 3470 the screen says cover open and it isn't. Help

Hi there
It is seeing it open because it may be the sencer or switch on this cover is broken or stuck open have a look at where the sencer or may be a switch.
Some times if you handy with your hands you can do some thing about it like stick some thing in the switch hole to click it on or if it a sencer put some tape over it then it thinks it closed.
