Question about Sony BDP-S550 Blu-Ray Player

2 Answers

I am trying to play Date Night in my blu ray. I can play any other blue ray I got besides this one. All I get is the update your bluray screen then it goes blank! It doesn't try to read the bluray it just goes blank. I checked all the cables. I reset the blue ray. I tried setting the output resoluttion at the absolute lowest. I updated my blueray to the newest version. And this one bluray doesnt work. I though it was the disk, so I got a brand new one. Same problem. I don't wan to invest in another bluray this one is only 2 years old! PLEASE HELP!

Remove the disk. Go into the player's setup menu. Disable BD-Live. You may also need to clear the player's memory (maybe called cache, but depends on your manufacturer and model).
Now insert the disk and it should load right away and play normally. This is happening because new disks are trying to use the internet to connect to a server to download new features for the disk (that's BD-Live). This would be cool, except that in some cases it causes this freezing problem where you can't even watch your movie.
Firmware updates don't seem to fix it--at least not yet. So far this seems to be a combination of a coding issue on the disks and perhaps firmware that doesn't know how to deal with the new code. Please post a reply if it works for you.

By the way, I see that you have a Sony. However, this problem affects many players. I have an LG. But the basic problem concerns how BD-Live accesses the internet. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with network speed or using wireless or wired. It's some kind of server/client issue, the best I can tell. Anyway, this is kind of a principle, if that makes sense, and you can pass this advice on to anyone having a similar problem with his or her blu-ray player. They all have BD-Live enabled by default. Again, you may have to clear the player's memory. Some store information about each disk similar to how web pages set cookies so they can provide content more efficiently. Turning off BD-Live and clearing the memory (if possible) will give you a fresh shot at loading and playing your movies. Good luck.

Wow. Thanks for the post, Greg! I just purchased "The Wolverine," and could not get it to play. Tried everything, called Sony, called Foxmovies. They gave me the run-around. Your suggestion worked! THANK YOU!!!!!

It would not surprise me if the coding was again updated.
I would take the disk to another player, and see if it plays.

Since you have two disks of the same movie and both won't play but all others will, sound like a bad batch of this movie.

Good luck.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem, Date Night won't play in my BDP-S350 player, the model below your one. I tried firmware update, larger USB memory stick etc, no luck. I took disc to rental shop, and it plays fine in their Samsung player! I decided to get it on DVD instead. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I suspect Sony are not providing firmware updates quickly enough to keep up with movie releases!

My sharp blu ray player no longer plays blu rays

If it plays CDs and DVDs but not BluRays at all, then the blue laser is burned out. CDs and DVDs use a different laser. A needed firmware update would not prevent it from reading a BluRay.

A new "Tangled" movie disc not play in Blu-Ray

As newer bluray movies come out they are constantly tweeking the format. More then likely you need to update your bluray players firmware or software. There should be an option under the menu for the bluray player to update the unit of course this will require that you have it hooked into the internet via ethernet cable or wifi network.

My Sony BDP-S370/BX37 does not play all the Bluray discs I have. For instance it will not play Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland but will play Disney's Sleeping Beauty and Coraline. What do I need to do?

In most cases, the issue might be with the Java contents on the new Blu-ray discs is making this issues. The Blu-ray technology is developing everyday and adding more and more features to the existing technology. Hence it is required to make the Blu-ray Player up-to-date by installing the latest firmware update available from the manufacturer (who ever it is). Going ahead with the first step, please install the latest firmware update available for the Blu-ray Player.

Please click the following link to get the latest firmware update available for your Blu-ray Player:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?upd_id=6237&mdl=BDPS370

You can review the "Important Notes" and "Firmware Update Instructions" on the page to get the instructions to install the firmware update.

If the issue persists after installing the firmware update, it would have been with the disc. Check the disc with another player; try different discs with same player.

If the Blu-ray Player is not at all playing any Blu-ray disc, then it may require service.

Will your machine play standard movie DVD discs? if it does then the laser pickup assembly is the problem. The blue ray discs require a higher precision tracking to offer better resolution.

Blue ray player wont play a new disk says it needs

Software updates have to be done on bluray players whenever the technology in bluray discs themselve is changed. If you call the number for 20th century fox on the back of the bluray a representative there will explain to you what has changed technologically in this bluray that has caused there to be software updates for all of the bluray players. I believe LG can send you a disc so that you can update your player. Give them a call. The bluray players are all manufactured and shipped to the stores. In the meantime if an update is needed and its sitting on the shelf at the store until you buy it, even if you've just bought it an hour ago it will still need to be updated. The stores do not unbox the blu ray players and update them for you. However the Geek squad will update bluray players for customers for a fee.
